Gabrielle Union’s Walk Of Style

posted by Sista on October 23, 2009

Gabrielle Union looked especially regal last night as she walked the red carpet at the 2009 Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Award Ceremony. Gabrielle can presently be seen in the ABC drama “Flash Forward”, where she plays the character of Zoey, who is the love interest of Demitri Noh. Gabrielle’s interracial relationship on the show is being hailed by many, as it is the first time an African American female and Asian male have been paired together on prime time television. Next up for Gabby is the “Body Politic” which is due to debut in 2010 and “The Van Zandt Shakedown” which is currently still listed in pre-production.

Letoya Luckett Shoot Regret Video (3) Letoya Luckett’s “Lady Love” album appears not to be dead in the water after all. After the singer’s first two singles (Not Anymore & She Ain’t Got) failed to spark any interest at radio, word was Capitol Records was abandoning the project. However, with her latest single “Regret” climbing the R n’ B charts and quickly becoming a fan favorite, it appears Capitol is quickly doing an about face. Letoya took to her Twitter page earlier this week to let fans know promotion of her new album would indeed go on and that she was presently shooting a video for the “Regret” single. Letoya tweeted a few images from the set, several included special guest, rapper Ludacris.

New Promo Shots: Alicia Keys & Rihanna

posted by Sista on October 23, 2009

Both Alicia Keys and Rihanna have new albums coming out within the next few weeks. Alicia’s “Element of Freedom” is due to hit record store shelves on December 1st, while Rihanna’s “Rated R” is due to make it’s debut a week before on November 23rd. Both singers recently debuted new promotional shots for their album as well. Alicia didn’t stray too far from her good girl image, while Rihanna, as expected, took a sharp left turn from her previous looks and debuted a darker more sexual look than many had expected.

Both singers promo shots can be seen below and I personally love them both. Alicia is who she is. She doesn’t need an image to sell her brand of music and so I expected her new promo shots to be subdued and indeed this first one to be released is just that.

Rihanna on the other hand is very much and image driven artist and so her promo shots are used to convey a message as much as her music is. Her newly released image is just fiyah. She took a hairstyle everyone laughed at and made it work for her. She looks amazing. I anxiously look forward to her new images as much as I did those of Janet Jackson with her most recent album and Beyonce with her “I Am… Sasha Fierce” album.

D. Woods New Solo Project

posted by Sista on October 22, 2009

Former Danity Kane member D. Woods is about to release her first solo album since splitting from the MTV/Diddy created group that made her famous. The singer took to her Twitter page recently to post an image of her album’s cover art, as well as it’s release date. Titled “The Gray Area”, D’s new album will hit record store shelves on December 8th and will reportedly feature production from Ne-Yo, The Dream and Tricky Stewart.

D. Woods The Gray Area Album Cover

D. recently blogged about her album and explained it’s title to those who may have found it a tad bit confusing.

“This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for!

I, D. Woods, will be releasing some music!!! Trust me boys and girls, I’ve been more anxious than you. Over the past year, I’ve existed in one of the most awkward situations yet in my life. Both loving and hating the profession I’ve chosen for myself, in bondage and then breaking free from contractual chains, both visible and obscure on the world stage, excited but also scared to death of what’s to come. It was exactly as my attorney repeatedly described my termination from DK as while prying me out of the contract, “a gray area”.

I was in limbo. I’m sure there are lots of artists and people in other lines of work feeling the same thing. In order to relate to others, I described my situation like the many who found themselves unemployed at the end of 2008 and throughout 2009. So what did you guys do while in your “gray area”? Some of you are still in it right?

Well what I did was what I’ve been doing since 3 years old, what I love doing and can’t help but to do no matter what’s happening, that’s staying creative.

Reintroducing myself to myself, detoxing my psyche from the negative images, comments and stereotypes that were forced on me, and just letting everything I held back for the last 2 1/2 years flow, I ended up with the beginning of a body of work that is truly D.Woods. I say the beginning because the metamorphisis is still in progress. But I’ve come to realize that I’m not just doing this for me, I want those out there who’ve been rooting for me to see, hear and rock out to the work I’ve been doing.

So, on 12.08.09 Woodgrane Entertainment (that’s my company yall ;) in partnership with Bonzi/Fontana UMD presents D.Woods’ “The Gray Area” will be available online through all the online music stores! Thank you for hitting me up on twitter, myspace, if u saw me in the mall or late night at Kroger, booking me at ur clubs in your city etc.
It fueled the fire to get me through THE GRAY AREA! Xoxo!”

Girl, Leave Her Man Alone

posted by LJ Knight on October 22, 2009

Girl Leave Her Man Alone Girl Leave Her Man Alone is a book written by Dionne Mahaffey. It centers around women who sleep with other woman’s men and the reasons why. It also has a intent focus on women working together and building on a sisterhood where principles and morals would not allow a woman to feel comfortable enough to sleep with another woman’s man. It would be almost like breaking a code or law created and maintained by women. Hmm, I like it but is this possible? Although the idea seems noble the execution of it may seem futile to most. Extra marital affairs have been going on since the beginning of time. However, I applaud Mahaffey for speaking this theory of a woman’s evolution, so to speak into existence.

I also commend Mahaffey for her moral obligations because they seem to be very closely linked to mine. I would and have never knowingly messed around with another woman’s man. In my case the reasons were a combination of morality and egoism. I always felt like I was too fly to have to play second to any woman or to have to share. Why do that when I could have my own? I always felt like I was worth that and above having half a man. However, other women do not live by that code. Although I do see this as a two to tango situation, I like Mahaffey, have to also put a level of moral responsibility on the woman. Before you go with the “Girl! You trying to blame the woman like most women do” allow me to break it down for you. As a woman, you should know that some men are dogs and will cheat if given the opportunity. If only there were more women who did not offer themselves up to these men who they knew were involved. If the man has no one who will take him up on his fresh serving of sausage then what can he do but go home to his wife with his tail between his legs. Can you imagine the impact it would make if no woman agreed to give up the honey pot to an involved man? Men all around the world would be forced to stay home and spend their free time with their wives/girls/families. Aww, that’s too bad (laughing victoriously).

For example, what if instead of Alicia Keys agreeing to dating married Producer Swizz Beatz she obliged by the rules of sisterhood and said “Oh no buddy, no can do. I will not help you cheat on your wife. If you are unhappy with your wife and want to leave her then that is your personal choice but you need to make that clear to her and completely end things with her first. In fact, I refuse to date or see you in any kind of way until you handle whatever needs to be done with her in either direction. Sorry buddy. Take care of your home.” Leaving Mashonda no room to feel slighted by Alicia Keys or possibly her husband. This route would force them to have to ultimately do right. This is why I commend Mahaffey for this book. Although it does not take the responsibility away from the man it does remind the women of how much control they truly have. A fact that I think we often forget. I can recall an older man once telling me that women have no idea how much power we possess over a man. We just offer our power up to them on a platter to keep them around for fear that whatever we do not oblige to, another woman will. Here is the key, what if there was not another woman that would because we were all on the same page? This is the teaching that Mahaffey offers.

Some may see this post as unavailing because they believe that there will never come a day when women around the world can come together and agree that they see assisting a man in cheating on his wife, breaking up his home, and perhaps ruining another person’s life as morally degrading to them and therefore something that they simply will not do. They will in turn leave comments like “girl please!” and insist that I am trying to place blame on the women, therefore missing the whole point of my entry and blah blah blah. Sigh. I know this and I am sure Mahaffey does too. There is always wishful thinking.

Print ScreenA Word For My Sistas was first launched back in May, 2008. Initially a blog site, A Word For My Sistas is now an online magazine created to inform, inspire, and uplift women of color. With new issues delivered biweekly, A Word For My Sistas hopes to become one of the premiere destinations for women of color.

I am excited about the progression of A Word For My Sistas and is hopeful that it will become everything I envisioned it to be. Launching A Word For My Sistas as an online magazine is a reminder to me that I should always follow my dreams and never be afraid of failure.

I want to thank my husband for being my #1 fan. I want to thank Shawna J, the face behind Brown Sista, for truly exemplifying what it means to help someone else along the way. Last but not least, thanks to Purr Design for all their creative efforts.

Glam Or Slam: Amber Rose

posted by Ari on October 20, 2009

Model Amber Rose attended last night’s 16th annual Elle Women in Hollywood Tribute. She wore a short red ruffled dress made by designer Antonio Beradi, nude platform pumps, a nameplate, and diamond studs. Rose looked nice compared to her usual exposed attire, but there is still something missing that I can’t put my finger on, maybe it’s her exotic eyelashes. I don’t know,I need your help. Did she look Glam or Slam?
