Empire creator Lee Daniels has cast Queen Latifah as the lead of his next music-themed show for the Fox network. The as yet untitled project will revolve around a girl group, set to be played by newcomers Ryan Destiny (Low Winter Sun), Brittany O’Grady (The Messengers) and Jude Demorest (Dallas).
Queen Latifah will play Carlotta, a beauty shop owner who befriends the girls and becomes a sort of surrogate mother to the trio.
Destiny, O’Grady and Demorest will each be looking to strike it big as a newly formed girl group in search of their big break. Destiny has landed the role of Alexandra, a wealthy 20-year old who grew up on New York’s Upper East Side. She dreams of leaving behind the family business and making it on her own. Demorest and O’Grady will play sisters Star and Simone. Both grew up in foster homes and see music as their way out.
The show will take place in Atlanta, and just like Empire, will feature some of the industry’s biggest stars in guest appearances. Production begins in the spring of 2016, with the show scheduled for a mid-season debut (January 2017).
