Love, who produced Kelly’s biggest hit to date, “Motivation,” questioned the singer’s loyalty and decision not to invite him to contribute to her 2013 album “Talk a Good Game.”
In an interview with the Breakfast Club, Love basically said he was the Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis to Kelly’s budding Janet Jackson, but after giving the singer a smash hit, she gave him the boot.
“Two years of developing this girl. A girl who wasn’t as confident as the girl you see today. Two years of every day in the studio getting to know each other. Fighting and arguing. Laughing. Crying and being happy and being sad. And making this record. And then you put out one single and it’s a humongous smash. Then after that you don’t hear no Rico and Kelly records anymore.”
Love says he contacted Kelly about doing work on her next album, only to have her respond with “Let me pray about it.” Love says Kelly didn’t have to pray about working with him when she was “ice cold” and says his desire was never to just give her a song, but to help create an entire album of classics for her.
In an interview with Billboard earlier this month, Kelly said she’s in the beginning stages of recording her new album and is busy recruiting producers. Kelly confirmed Pharrell’s participation and says she’s hoping to bring Timbaland on board as well.
As for Rico, he says he wishes Kelly the best and is busy prepping to release his own album and that of newcomer Tiara Thomas.
