Rihanna Shoots New Video
Singer Rihanna was spotted out in Santa Monica, California shooting the new video for her next single, Hate That I Love You, which features Ne-Yo. So far the pics that I have only feature Rihanna so I have no idea whether Ne-Yo will make an appearance or not. I believe this video was actually shot a few weeks ago because I have seen these images before, even though they just became available to the public today. Rihanna doesn’t seem to be wearing a cast in any of these pics so I think that my assumption is correct. Rihanna is releasing videos at a very rapid pace and one can only assume it is to keep the momentum of her album going. Though Umbrella was a huge hit, none of the singles she has released since have faired as well and her album has only gone gold.

I have to drag Beyonce’s name into the post because a) methinks they’re making all of these videos to form a video anthology but don’t want to directly copy Beyonce’s B’Day video anthology so by spacing them out, it looks less obvious; b) Rihanna in a bra top and high-waisted pencil skirt is a direct homage to Beyonce in that exact outfit in “Irreplacable” which was written by Ne-Yo.
But it’s too bad Rihanna’s sales are so bad–the album is actually rock solid and I like Rihanna’s new stylist for this era in her career.

How is it that Rihanna’s latest album has received moderate sales, yet she’s released or after this will have released 4 videos from the album?
What about Kelly Rowland? (by comparison) She’s only released one in the span of 4/5 months and her album’s been out in less? (or is it more) time than Rihanna’s? Also, by comparison, Eve, whose album hasn’t dropped yet (I don’t think) yet she’s working on her second video?
My point? Kelly…can we get more videos? more singles? Please?

Madame Zenobia, from what I see, it’s about saving face. Def Jam put A LOT of money into Rihanna and they would have egg on their face if they, after seeing how poorly her record is selling, were to pull support from her. They pumped her up, enabled her to have all of these endorsements and publicity, so they’re saving face by pushing her to do all of these videos and releasing a lot of singles to distract everyone from her poor sales.
The same with Eve: she gets a big push from her label because it saves both Eve and her label’s face to keep giving her funding to counteract the fact that her rap game is over (due to a variety of reasons)–and Eve went back to her rap game when her TV show was canceled so leaping back into music right after the show was axed saved face as though she is saying “I always meant to make another album” to shrug off any murmurings that she only did so because her acting career stalled.
Kelly never got any push or any hype prior to and after her sophomore album dropped, so there was no need for the label to save face for her because no one was really anticipating her album. That’s the way the machine works.

Rihanna looks awesome, and while her look is reminiscent of the Irreplaceable video, she is slimmer and looks better. I personally am not a big Rihanna or Beyonce fan, but it annoys me to no end when a black woman tries to do something and it is always compared and criticized. We are the only race that does this. You think when Hannah Montana came out with her album all those white people were like ‘OMG she’s trying to be just like HIlary Duff and Lindsay Lohan!! She needs to stop! Why are they giving her a contract ! OMG!’ Nope.
Now I am not saying support someone just because they black- not at all. I won’t buy the majority of rap albums because of the cursing, and a lot of RnB because there is only so much sex I can hear about. What I am saying , is try to judge the girl based on what she’s doing- I think its great that she had a new sound- she (well her producers anyway lol) have an ecclectic mix of music.
People- we are no longer on the plantation competing for a pat on the back from massa. Where the music industry is concerned, we need to stop having that slave mentality. Back in the day we were not allowed to have so many artistes out there, and we got accustomed to only a select few each having a distinct sound and vibe. We are in 2007. If Rihanna wants to wear a dammned pencil skirt and a bra in her video , she can and will.

Thanks for that explanation. I ‘get it’ in regards to Rihanna, but Eve…not so much. Still, could it be that the record company since KR’s FIRST release wanted to try to ’save face’ for her? Hasn’t her first album done better than this sophomore release? I guess the initial push back of the second album was their attempt ‘then’ to ’save face’. Something tells me that ‘that’ album, when released when it was meant to originally, probably would’ve fared BETTER for Kelly R. *sigh* Thanks for the convo

There really is no difference between the two. Rihanna puts herself out there just as much as Beyonce does, and she is so young. People are buying or downloading single songs and not the entire albums. Its harder to sell the entire albums but downloads or short cds with just a few songs on it sell more than the entire albums, plus illegal music downloading cuts into sells. The request for song play around the world had been used to help measure a songs popularity.
