Rumors Of A “Girlfriends” Cancellation

We hear from a source within the “Girlfriends” writing camp that the CW has decided to cancel the series immediately instead of bringing it back for a ninth season. While no official announcement had been made as of press time, we were told the CW will not even film this season’s remaining nine episodes that were suspended during the writer’s strike. Ironically, news of the show’s cancellation comes just as the strike has ended and the writing staff was preparing to return to work. We were informed by one of the writers yesterday that Monday night’s one-hour block of new episodes served as the show’s last. “Girlfriends” became the longest-running live-action comedy series currently on network television with the debut of its current season in October 2007. The writers strike suspended production after only 13 of 22 ordered episodes were completed.

The series, created by Mara Brock-Akil, was consistently the No. 1 show in black households since its Sept. 11, 2000 debut. Original cast members Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White and Jill Marie Jones starred as a group of close friends dealing with life and love in Los Angeles. Jones left the series in at the end of Season 6.

  1. I really did not watch the show but that is mess up if they taking them off like that.

  2. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO THIS IS NOT FAIR. THEY COULD ATLEAST FINISHED THE SEASON OUT AND GIVE US A PROPPER ENDING!!!!!!!!!!
IF THIS WAS DESPERITE HOUSE WIFES THEY WOULD OF AT LEAST GAVE A PROPER ENDING.
THE LAST TWO SHOWS WERE NOT A GOOD WAY TO END, I KNEW SOMETHING WAS UP WHEN JOANS HUSBAND WAS COMMING HOME SOON. I SHOULD OF SAW IT COMMING

  3. They always do black shows like that, The Steve Harvey show, Moesha and now Girlfriends. That’s just wrong, but when Seinfield’s final episode was airing they had billboards and crazy commercials. I loved this show, and I admit I did not like the turn the show took. After a while it became unrealistic, I couldn’t relate to it any more, but being that the show was still a huge success for the most part, they deserved better. They should have had a finale with Toni & Joan making up and Joan’s wedding or something 🙄 I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS! If last nights episode was the last, they were Robbed like a Don King fight.

  4. Typical. I am not shocked at all. Television is known for just throwing Black shows off the air with no wrap up at all. One day they are there and the next they are gone with no explanation at all. Makes me angry but like Liyah said we should all be used to it by now.

  5. I’m not that sad; I watched it, but it just hasn’t been the same since “Toni” left

  6. I didn’t watch either, but it’s a shock to read they would shelf it like that.

  7. I can’t believe they are doing this. I think the CW wants to get rid of shows with predominantly black characters. If you take a look at the rest of their programing, you’ll see that they are targeting white teenage girls with shows like Gossip Girls which has become a hit show. Once they created The Game the script for Girlfriends became boring. It seems like they shifted focus.

This ERKS me big time. Girlfriends used to be a great show, and I feel like they can re-create it and bring in large numbers of viewers if they really wanted to.

I hate shows like Everybody Hates Chris. TV networks act like it’s a SIN to show black characters as intelligent human beings with careers. They act like its not believable and we can’t relate to it. The CW sucks for pulling this show.

  8. Get the email address and write to them. It may sound useless but when that idiot broadcaster on the CBS affiliate disrespected Janet Jackson, her fans (and lots of her Stans, self included) wrote the station and complained , management made the reporter apologize on air. They also showed the thousands of letters the station received and reports said that the emails shut down their server for an entire day.

Get all of the women together who love the show, send them emails and ask them to email the station. It works.

  9. I AIN’T SURPRISED THEY ALWAYS DO BLACK SHOWS THAT WAY. WHY IS IT THAT SOME KINDA WAY THEY ALWAYS FIND WAYS TO GIVE BLACKS THE SHORT END OF THE STICK IN HOLLYWOOD…….LIFE PERIOD; IT REALLY MAKES U MAD U KNOW.

  10. I haven’t even watched this season of Girlfriends. Girlfriends just has not been the same since Toni left. All four girlfriends brought something different to the show and they had great chemistry.

  11. OH, AND WHAT HAPPENED TO TONI CHILDS CHARACTER ANYHOW? WHAT IS THE REAL REASON THAT SHE LEFT? I NEVER DID THINK SHE WAS A GOOD FRIEND THOUGH. I JUST FOUND HER ARROGANCE TRULY HILARIOUS! SO WHEN SHE WAS GONE THAT PART OF THE SHOW WAS BORING. SHE KINDA BROUGHT SPICE TO THE GROUP.

  12. Well, to point out the obvious ha ha it’s had a LONG RUN compared to some shows, some ‘Black’ shows that often don’t make it. And I have to agree; without Ms. Toni Childs, it’s just different.

  13. CHEY U TOOK THE COMMENT RIGHT OUTTA MY MOUTH! TONI WAS NOOOOOOOOOOT A GOOD FRIEND. REMEMBER WHEN SHE CUT UP JOAN’S MAID OF HONOR DRESS FOR HER WEDDING. THAT WAS COLD.

  14. Liyah, I agree with everything you said. The show has not been the same since Jill Marie Jones left. Brianna she evidently left because she wanted to do movies and doing the show did not allow her to do that. I would watch just to know what’s going on. But it is boring. I’d rather watch the old episodes on BET. If you go to the CW website, they took The Game and Girlfriends off. During the writer’s strike, they were going to move them back to Sundays. In all honesty the show was over without Toni Childs. That’s just jacked up how they are trying to do it.

  15. okay i’m really pissed!! that cannot possibly how they are gonna bring the show to a close. how disrespectful to cancel the show right when it’s getting really good, and not even give it the proper closing. i’ve been a fai

  16. SORRY I MEANT TO SAY I’VE BEEN A FAN SINCE THE SHOW STARTED AND THE FACT THEY THEY WOULD JUST CANCEL THE SHOW AND NOT GIVE THE FANS A PROPER CLOSING IS TOTALLY UNJUSTIFIED

  17. That’s some bulliissshhh. I have been a fan since day 1.They do this all the time with black shows, it does not surprise me at all. Granted the show has not been the same since Jill Marie Jones left but not enough to cancel the whole show. :noway: I can’t relate to some of these shows that cater to white America. Thank God for Re- Runs

  18. They could at least finish out the show properly though- no matter their “reason”. I hope this is not true because even though the show isn’t really bangin’ these days…. it’s good to have it on air and see “us” :brownsista: on the tele.

  19. Not a big fan of sitcoms, but I would occasionally watch this show when it would rerun and I liked it a few times. Although everyone I know that really watches it says it’s not as good as it used to be and rarely tune in to see what happen. I’m not sure if they tend to pull black shows off so quickly because they’re black or because they see it as a bigger loss to make shows they feel aren’t making the ratings. I see shows that aren’t black getting canceled without endings, too. Not standing up for the station, just wondering.

  20. Black people stand up!!! I usually don’t get worked up over things like this but come on now. First with Half and Half (They cancelled it right before we found out who Mona chose), then UPN (It seems like those shows were gone so fast I cant remember what they were) and before that TGIF (can’t remember what shows we had besides Family Matters but still). Girlfriends did suck for a minute this season and after Toni left but they just started getting back on track and it’s funny how they cancel our shows but let trash like Sex and the City stay on until those old broads can barely stand!!!! What shows do we have that cater to black women???Every day I see a new commercial for shows like Lipstick Jungle and other shows which feature a leading cast of white women that are career driven and “have it all”. I am so mad because at 27 I have no African American shows to watch at all unless I want to be bombarded with stereotypes!!! BET needs to be laid to rest because I can’t even stomach that garbage anymore. Anyway here is the information if you care enough to let them know that we matter too and to stop just writing us off like we don’t watch anything but comedies. Well after this rant it’s now it’s back to work being the only black woman in my department…..

  21. Thanks Shaneek,

I will do my part. Instead of complaining about it, let’s do something about it. If we don’t try, nothing will be done.

  22. I admit the show hasn’t been all that great this season (Even without Toni last season was still really good) but I watch it anyway because I am a fan of seeing the women and fashion. It would be shame and unfair for the show to go out like that. As far as The Game, I hope that is a rumor!

Honestly, I am not surprised though, as stated before, this happens to black shows all the time. A Different World went out like that as well and that was MY SHOW!

note: It doesn’t help that most of you stopped watching anyway; how else is a show supposed to survive without ratings?

  23. Blacksista I agree. I was watching the show even when I wasn’t enjoying it just so the ratings would be somewhat decent. 😥

  24. Exactly, we have to support our own. It’s our “Sex In The City” but I must admit I DVR the re-runs. 🙂 Samantha and Miranda Rules!

  25. I hope that The CW does not take Girlfriends off the air that one of the best black shows that we have and they need to stay on the air. Besides you that other races don’t want to see US prosper in any career field but WE will. HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. I just wrote a letter to the network about their disrespect to black viewers. I hope you all take the time to email the network as well. We should let them know that we care and are disappointed with their choice. They will lose viewers because of this.

  27. Shaneek, Thanks so much for posting that information. I just sent an email to Nancy Tellem, and I hope that others will also. It’s fine to discuss our dismay here on the board, but we have to take it a step further and do something about it. The networks need to know that we care about our programming and that we’re a force to be reckoned with; if we don’t act they will continue to behave in this same manner.

Use your power; If we all band together we can make a difference (or at least drive ’em crazy with a barrage of emails  Be Blessed

  28. This is some disrespectful mess. First Half & Half now this. They do it to our shows because we don’t express our anger to the networks. If you are as upset as I am, please send an email to cw/cbs and let them know that we have a voice and that young white girls are not the only ones that bring ratings. Many of us have laughed and cried with these women for 8 years. We as well as the actors, staff and writers deserve a fitting ending. Write ladies and Gents!!! Its more than just a show being cancelled, it is the blatent indifference and disrespect toward minority viewers.

  29. Wow, here we go again. I remember how impressed I was that they did a wrap up show when “Good Times” went off the air. Then when Cosby and Different World went off the air I said to myself ok this is good. Now I do have a problem with them taking the Girls off the air like this. I did enjoy and love Half & Half and was very disappointed when it got cancelled. I must also agree that with out Toni Childs character (Jill Marie Jones) the show has not been as funny.
Hopefully they will not creat another “slapstick uneducated black comedy” for us to insult ourselves with again.
I would love to see a new black comedy/drama based on black college students. Different World was truely a classic and increased the enrollement for black colleges for a while.
If anyone can get to Mr. Cosby please ask him to help us as a community again. 😉

  31. jo jo boo boo you have all the questions; please share with us you views. Obviously there is something on your mind.

  32. They have done this to popular white shows as well. Full House and Married With Children were also canceled suddenly with no warning. They never got to have final episodes either.

  33. The decision is very unprofessional to come all this way and to just end it just like that. They deserved to have a final episode like Friends did. This show was no fluke millions of women ascross the world loved this show and there is no simular one to watch.I guess they’ll just replace it with another reality shoe.

  34. I can not believe that people are actually ready to put forth effort into not cancelling Girlfriends. I mean the show was OKAY…Kinda…I guess. Maybe. With the random string of sexual relationships, and lonely black women and not to mention that horrible outfit that comes on right before the show comes on. (I think it’s purple)…

I’m happy. I think that maybe we can make room for a show that portrays black folks from other walks of life because I can certainly not relate.

  35. I just want to say that I think the CW SUCKS BIG-TIME!!!! How could all of you be so damned ignorant and just cancel the show like that? I think it is down-right dis-respectful not only for all of the fans but also for the cast. I mean if we, the fans are pissed off and upset, how the heck do you think the cast feels? I think that all of us Die-Hard Girlfriends fans should demand that they continue the show and give it the proper finale it deserves. It’s not right to just end it this way, I have been following the show since it first aired in 2000 and have been hooked on it ever since then. I’m always checking to see when the next new episode will be coming out and I don’t get tired of watching the repeats over and over because it is that type of show that doesn’t bore you. People can relate to it on so many levels. IT IS UNFAIR AND INCONSIDERATE ON BEHALF OF THE CW TO END THE SHOW LIKE THIS. Girlfriends is the only reason why I ever joined the cw lounge. It is so upsetting to see that the cw would be so inconsiderate to the fans and the cast of the show. I really hope the cw re-considers and what is up with them not even promoting the 3rd season???? I found out through amazon.com! And even worse, they chose to do it during Black History Month! They have no consideration or regard for anyone but their damned wallets! I’m pissed off and I am not Black!!!! I really wish that if you don’t do the right thing and continue the show or put the last episodes on DVD, that the CW goes to HELL!!!!!!! I WILL NEVER SUPPORT THIS CHANNEL AGAIN OR WATCH ANYTHING ON IT, AND I WILL SPREAD THE WORD!! Come on GIRLFRIENDS FANS, SUPPORT THIS!!!!!

  36. What is up with that????? That totally sucks. I’ve been a loyal fan of girlfriends simce Day 1. My feelings are so hurt right now. :hmph:

  37. I watched the show every Monday and I loved it. It never fails if a black show is doing great they take it off the air. I guess like all the other great sitcoms I will have to wait for them to come on TVOne. Well, now I have no reason to watch the CW and maybe other people will stop watching that station…. :brownsista:

  38. why dont you quit complaining its still on BET, get over it its just a tv show…

  39. You know I am a latina and that show was the closest thing I could relate to. It pisses me off shows like this get cancelled. But not really a shock I guess.

  40. I always looked forward to Monday nights bc of GIRLFRIENDS….I loved that show and have been watching it from the jump….Dang another good show gone down the drain!

  41. I am so upset to see this show is going off of the air, and without a proper ending. For eight years we were able to see strong, intelligent, diverse black women. Where do we go now for quality television that reflects us as individuals, without being stereotyped? I would love to see Joan get married and feel that out of respect to the people who pay for their houses, CW should air a final episode for Girlfriends.

  42. I watched the show a little. I just couldn’t really get into it, it was like something was missing. The writing and story lines were weak, and I got tired of the Joan character and all of her whining. But I am happy that it lasted as long as it did. 😀
