Rutina Wesley Cast in OWN Drama “Queen Sugar”

RUTINA WESLEY CAST IN OWN DRAMA QUEEN SUGARRutina Wesley has landed a role in the upcoming OWN drama Queen Sugar. The series is based off of the Natalie Baszile novel of the same name, and will be helmed by Selma director Ava DuVernay.

Wesley will play Nora Bordleon, a New Orleans-based activist and journalist, whose life is turned upside down when her estranged sister returns from Los Angeles to help the family tend to their sugarcane farm.

The novel Queen Sugar was released just last year and tells the story of the Bordelon siblings: Charley, the wife and manager of an NBA player, Ralph, a father and ex-con trying to turn his life around, and Nora.

Within a month of it’s release DuVernay and Oprah teamed up to secure the rights to the book and turn it into a series. DuVernay has penned the pilot and will direct several episodes, while Oprah is also expected to have a recurring role.

  1. Loved Rutina from True Blood, but I don’t know if I’ll watch this new show, love Ava, but she tend to focus on civil rights or the mistreatment of blacks, and frankly I don’t want to be entertained by that anymore. But, congrats.

  2. Surprising Rutina wasn’t cast as the lead character in the book, who I assume will be the lead of the show as well. I hope she gets a great spotlight as Nora. She’s more than earned it at this stage in her career.
