Rutina Wesley has landed a role in the upcoming OWN drama Queen Sugar. The series is based off of the Natalie Baszile novel of the same name, and will be helmed by Selma director Ava DuVernay.
Wesley will play Nora Bordleon, a New Orleans-based activist and journalist, whose life is turned upside down when her estranged sister returns from Los Angeles to help the family tend to their sugarcane farm.
The novel Queen Sugar was released just last year and tells the story of the Bordelon siblings: Charley, the wife and manager of an NBA player, Ralph, a father and ex-con trying to turn his life around, and Nora.
Within a month of it’s release DuVernay and Oprah teamed up to secure the rights to the book and turn it into a series. DuVernay has penned the pilot and will direct several episodes, while Oprah is also expected to have a recurring role.
