ABC to End ‘Scandal’ After Seventh Season

‘Scandal’ to End After Season Seven

Get ready to say goodbye to Scandal, Gladiators. According to published reports, season seven of the hit ABC political drama will be its last. The show’s creator and showrunner, Shonda Rhimes, will reportedly make the announcement at the network’s Upfront presentation on May 16th.

Scandal’s demise has been hinted at for some time now, with both Rhimes and ABC admitting that creatively, the show may have run its course. Other sources claim Rhimes always saw the show ending after seven seasons. Whatever the case, Scandal is still a hot ticket on ABC’s line-up, averaging a 1.46 demo and 5.6 million viewers.

Scandal debuted back in 2013 and stars Kerry Washington as political fixer Olivia Pope. At the time of it’s premiere, the show became the first network series to be led by a black woman since 1974’s Get Christie Love. It is also credited with paving the way for actresses like Viola Davis, Meagan Good and Nicole Beharie, who have all scored leading roles in recent years.

  1. This is how networks cancel respected shows. ABC has a long standing relationship with Shonda Rhimes and they weren’t going to disrespect her by canceling Scandal in the rude way they usually cancel shows these days. Actors, writers and producers are rarely told by the network. They find out online like the rest of us. Shonda is ABC’s Dick Wolf so she’ll be allowed to go out on her own terms. But for ABC to be canceling them, there must be a money issue. Advertisers may have bounced due to controversial themes like the abortion episode. Based on their ratings, Scandal should have had at least two more good seasons left in them. With it off the air, HTGAWM can’t be far behind. They’ll probably get a fifth season and be done too.
