Serena, 30, rallied to come back and beat #1 seed Victoria Azarenka, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 at the Billie Jean King Center in the Flushing Meadows section of Queens.
“I honestly can’t believe I won. I really was preparing my runner-up speech, because I thought, ‘Man, she’s playing so great,” Williams said during the trophy presentation, adding: “I’m really shocked.”
Azarenka, who hadn’t dropped a three-set match all season until Sunday, congratulated Serena, saying: “Serena deserves the win. She showed how true of a champion she is. I definitely gave it all today. Stepping out of this court today, I will have no regrets.”
Serena’s win today is her 15th Grand Slam title overall. She is only the 6th woman to ever achieve such a feat.
