Solange Misses The Top 10 (Updated)
According to Hits Daily Double, Solange Knowles’ latest CD, Solo Angel & The Hadley Stree Dreams, will not make the top ten on next week’s Billboard albums charts. As many of you know, HDD is the bible of the music industry when it comes to early reports on album chart positions and is the source many websites and news organizations, including Billboard Magazine, turn to for daily updates on how newly released albums are selling across the country. Solange has been on a promotional blitz for the last few weeks in support of her CD, and has acquired quite a following of rabid fans who like her in your face style and lyrics. Unfortunately, none of her singles were picked up by Pop or R n’ B stations and both BET and MTV have largely ignored her videos.
Still, Solange always said she was not trying to be mainstream artist and never expected to have sales numbers like those of her sister. Her CD has received solid reviews and she finally has a fan base to call her own and I suspect that’s good enough news to make the singer head back into the studio and give it another try within a year or two.
Taken from Hits Daily Double:
YOUR LABOR DAY WEAKEND TOP 10 PREVIEW: Believe it or not, it’s still too close to call for #1 next week. Of course, over the next two (wildly unpredictable) days, anything can happen. Here’s how thing are shaping up as of late Thursday:
The Game (Geffen) 230-250k
Slipknot (Roadrunner) 230-250k
Kid Rock (Atlantic) 80-85k
Jonas Brothers (Hollywood) 80-85k
Mamma Mia! (Decca) 70-75k
Lil’ Wayne (Cash Money/Universal Motown) 50-55k
Coldplay (Capitol) 45-50k
Sugarland (Mercury Nashville) 45-50k
Now Country (UMe) 35-40k
Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 35-40k
Staind (Atlantic) 35-40k
You may now return to slathering on the SPF 30 for the last time this year.
Update:The final Sound Scan numbers are in and according to Billboard Magazine Solange’s new CD will debut inside the top 10 at #9 with sales of about 46,000.

For somebody who doesn’t want to be mainstream she sure does hit up all the promotional spots that mainstream artists go to: TRL, BET, David Letterman, FOX, The Morning Show, etc. She’s been everywhere lately and not always in the best way. I think her disclaimer that she doesn’t want to be mainstream is something she feels compelled to say in light of the fact that she probably can’t (not that she doesn’t want to) sell as many records as her sister. I personally think that Solange has an insatiable desire for this industry but she just doesn’t have that talent or “it” factor that makes her pop or stand out.
Anyway, what number will her album be at if it’s not in the top ten?

I agree totally with Unalteredbeauty. Solange wants success as much as the next artist. She just wants people to think that she doesn’t care so when she misses the mark, she would bypass criticism and disappointment. Why bother going to the mainstream press and media, if thats not your goal? She could have easily bypassed the industry, sold her music from her website (like Prince) and played small venues, if the superstar route is REALLY TRULY not her intention. Solange is an imposter trying to come off as down with the people but is really in it to win it. Don’t play with us like that Solo. Be true to yourself and you will win! Despite what many people are saying, you do have something special. Your approach is fresh and authentic, and you don’t have to be the anti Beyonce to sell it. Lets stop the “F the Industry” bullcrap because you are using every bit of it to sell yourself and our music. Let’s be real! You DO want superstardom! So, continue building your career one brick at a time. The world will see it sooner or later. I ignored your last effort. I stopped to look and listen this time. Maybe, I will buy a single next time. That’s how it builds. Keep it comin’ love!

This is yet another example of how anyone who does anything different is bound not to sell records. The hip hop and r&b game is beginning to wane in my opinion. i was actually lackluster about solo’s SOLO aspirations but once i heard the music i was impressed. Its good, no lie. Alot better than most of the crap that plays. Think for a second how many solo female artists do u hear on the radio as of late…dont worry ill wait LOL There’s jus no quality its all fluff and image. as much as i love bey i love solange for totally going the opposite direction with her music. The little brother/ little sister curse is a hard one to come out of…esp in light of her bad press she’s been getting for that interview. which in my opinion was a misunderstanding and not at all what they blew it up to be. she wasnt rude jus confused lol. But any ways i am truly fed up with the industry as a whole and most of the stuff i listen to is anywhere from 3 to 10 years old. Where’s the real music at?!?!? I like both of solo’s singles. i hope she keep doin her thing and not let haters or record sales discourage her. DO YO MAMI! loves ya!

its amazing how our music exploited by white people [amy winehouse, christina aiguillera] {and i will be the first to agree that those ladies are talented}will sell masses but when it comes to us representing it we face a backlash
if she had turn to the pop sugar style that her sister, rihanna and them use to sell i’ m sure she would have sold fine
And what is this i hear about her attitude? she is a knowles they all have attitude but for the sake of money her parents and sister disguise it ! didn’ t you hear matthew remarks on aretha ? the way he handle the anti deja vu video petition? do you miss tina’s eye rolling sessions whenever her daughter is put in a back seat? were you sleeping when beyonce was rolling her eyes and telling other destiny’s child girls to shut up? I really really love Solange’s CD. I’m the ultimate Beyonce fan, but I think lil sis music is more real. Has anyone ever thought that it is not an image and that Solange is really the person she portray to be. You don’t have to always play up an image to look good in front of the cameras. That’s why I like her. People expect her to act like Beyonce just because they are sisters. I understand where she is coming from, I’m a little sister and me and my sister are like day and night.
tlp said,
i;m sure solonge is a wonderful girl but she can’t sing, i’ve watched her perform on different telvision shows and her voice is awful. I don’t buy music just because it sounds good on the radio, i wait for the artist to make their rounds on different shows to sing and if they sound good live i’ll purchase their music. its ok to be different i embrace a persons individuality, but soloange needs to realize that if it wasn’t for her older sister we wouldn’t know who she was by talent alone, infact being beyonce sister has opened doors for her and made us curious about her and what she is about. their are many famous siblings that are famous because of their older siblings……..anyone heard of janet jackson? i bet we will see more of solange trying to incorporate beyonce in her acts now that her album didn’t project the numbers she thought they would, talent always prevail in the end.
Kim said,
i downloaded the cd after people on other blogs said the songs were great but besides a couple decents tracks the rest is pure garabage. she should have begged pharallel to produce more than one song, ask bee and jay to make a cameo, and dropped the arrogant, self-absorbed attitude, and took some singing lessons. That proves the saying “if you aint got it you aint got it.” I ‘m pretty sure they’ll lose money on this project.

I bought Solo’s’ album and it was solid. For those wishing for her to do badly because she got with the reporter, not a good look. She wrote her own songs (which some artists can or just don’t) I’m sure she put a lot into her project which is evident on at 6 of her songs on the CD . People a re always looking to hate on her , but I liked the fact her album did not sound like everyone else. I think her interview w/ the reporter gave people another excuse not to buy the album.

Bottom line is Solange wasn`t given a fair chance. Her cd is a good piece of artistic work; lyrically as well as production wise. It`s very much different than what you hear on the airwaves nowadays. This is just a prime example that if an artist steps outside the box they won`t be given a fair chance. Hell, if they won`t give your songs airplay as well as your videos how are you going to sell albums/records/? It doesn`t take a genius to figure that one out; it`s simple mathematics.
This is the very reason that I no longer listen to radio anymore. It`s the same ol` BS all the time. Everyone has the same sound and you have a handfull of artists in heavy rotation. I tell you it`s like clock work. Where`s the diversity? During my generation, back in the decade of the 80s, there was SO much of it. All artists, for the most part, were given a chance at having their music exposed to the masses. Like everything in life, some more successful than others but at least they were given a chance.
We all know that MJ owned the 80s, followed by Janet, Prince, Madonna, Lionel Richie, etc, but even so there was room for all artists. These artists didn`t have a monopoly on the airwaves. Hell, there was SO much diversity, one could throw a party while playing nothing but the radio and jam non-stop. You could actually go 4-5 hours before a song was even repeated. Today, you don`t have that. And that`s a huge reason why music has stalled enormously. There was a time where you would hear R & B, pop and funk on one station.
The spectrum was wide open. You would hear MJ and then the next minute you`d hear Rick James. You`d hear Prince and then Kool & The Gang. You`d hear Janet and then The Time. That`s DIVERSITY folks and it doesn`t get any better. Because music today is so pigeon hole you don`t hear the Chrisette Michelle`s etc. This girl has real talent and can blow with the best of them. She`d make Billie Holiday, Sarah, Vaughn, Minnie Ripperton, Denise Williams, etc. very proud. Vocally she can match ANY artist on the scene today.
It`s a shame though that she won`t get the exposure on the airwaves. Solange may not be the strongest vocalist but she can hold her own. Bottom line is she brings a fresh new sound to the game and it`s not rewarded/appreciated. As far as I`m concerned there are NO icons of today`s generation of artists; not ONE. Show me a Michael Jackson, Janet, Prince, Madonna, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, etc. My point is, if there was room for all artists during their time then there`s certainly room for everyone of today`s era. Because once again I see NO icon/icons. PERIOD……
MJ & The GOLDEN 80s forever!!!

Unfortunately for Solange her sister was the most hated on female artist ever so she knew it was coming her way and it has in droves. Her album is very good. she can sing despite idiots saying she can’t and her vocal arrangements are spot on. Contrary to some I dont think the Pharrell joint is the best on the album. There are a few better. Unfortunately since she doesnt have Lil Wayne or any other rappers (thank god) all over the CD she wont get airplay.
This is a candidate for best female R&B album this year and better than B-DAy. Too bad no one may ever know in the mainstream. F*ck the Industry!

regular music channels such as MTV and BE Tdo not play alot fo her music because it doesn’t appeal to the masses. So her music is played on MTV Jams, Vh1 Soul, and BETJ because they play a variety of videos from underground to mainstream. Most neo-soul acts who are considered to be underground go on widely publicized shows to promote their albums. I don’t see anything wrong with that. All in all she wasn’t going to sell like her big sis because their styles are different.

All her hype and her bad attitude didn’t produce sells no more than Kelly Rowland. I just really feel sorry for Michelle because in honesty her songs would have been appreciate more from a larger audience. Oh well Michelle I hope they savage your Rand B comback and you open up way better than this album does. I think it is a bad idea to blame the artist for not getting picked up by today’s radio stations. Whoever the “powers that be” that are controlling what is played are leaving a lot of good music “on the cutting room floor”. There is ZERO diversity on the airwaves and I no longer listen.
I have seen many artist who do not get support from radio perform on late night talk shows. This is still the best way to get exposure for viewers of all tastes, ages, etc. are watching. It is very smart that Solange chose this route to establish her fan base.
I have said it before and I am saying it again–one must search the internet for RnB/neo soul music these days. This is the site I go to to find the latest in Christian and “brand new, never gets played on the radio” soul music. Search “neosoul” and the current #1 station is “I Luv NeoSoul”. I learned of this web only station on MySpace. This sation plays lots of new music. I also like an old school RnB station out of Atlanta that also webcasts their program.

I was really rooting for Solange but even I didn’t think her album would do that well. I think Geffen should’ve released her in 09. The time they started promoting the album in my opinion was all wrong. First off, the music industry is about to get into fourth quarter where they promote big named artists that are known for selling aka the ushers, alicia keys, beyonces & etc. I feel like they rushed to put out solanges album. Solange needs alot more time for people to grow on her because people dont even want to give her a chance because shes “nameless” sister. Being that we all know I decided wasn’t being played on every station - I think they shouldve put out 2 more singles before they released the album. People are still saying “solange WHOOOO?” People want to sit there and be like its just pop crap selling, but alicia keys is a good example. Alot of her music is soulful/r&b. There are others like her trying to do the same thing but are surely not going to sell like her for example Karina Pasian. Alicia Keys had a mainstream hit & had support from the king of the core djs who got her material played everywhere.I wont say that Solange doesnt have that “IT” factor because I feel that shes going in the right direction image wise…but shes not coming off to the public as “likeable” & shes still doing the same dance moves as beyonce. I don’t think you can compare whats happening to solange to what went down in the 80s. In the 80s there may have been every artist that had their own style but they had ATLEAST one song thats mainstream and commercial for that time period. Solange doesnt have that mega commercial hit for the genre she is trying to master. I liked her album nonetheless (well i rate it a 7/10; so it was okay) but it was nothing I would call a classic. I love neosoul and I love alot of the songs that didnt make the album cut but her album imo is just OKAY.

Someone said that we wouldn’t know who Solange was if we didn’t know who her sister was….and I’m sorry to say its true. There’s nothing special about her and there’s nothing that her marketing gimmick DAD can do to make her appear more than what she is. Which is a bore. Kinda like Michelle and Kelly.
Now I have Chrisette Michelle’s CD and her talent although not commercial is the business. When you have the it factor though it will shine through and resonate cause it’s something you’re born with and can’t be manufactured. Singing is not in everyone’s calling.

Sorry, but I just don’t buy Solange’s bad girl image. It is so obvious that she is desperate to get out of her big sister’s shadow. But acting like a diva in training and disrespecting that reporter was not at all cute especially when you are not even an A, B or C list celebrity. Get over yourself girl. The only reason Solange is getting interviews and promos is because of Beyonce’s fame. Other than that, she would be in the far back ground just like so many other R&B artist that have way more talent than her. She basically killed her career before it got started.
Truth be told, no matter when Michelle Williams CD is released, it will see less numbers and promotion than Kelly Rowland. Face it; Solange, Kelly and Michele will always be in Beyonce’s shadow thanks to this image over raw and real talent industry.

No, we do get Solange’s style of music. The problem is Solange doesn’t have the soulful voice or personality to pull it off so instead she comes across a tad bit fraudulent. Such music should be left to Amel Laurieux, Goapele, India.Arie, Rashaan Patterson, Janelle Monae, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and hell, even Amy Winehouse because they have the voices and effortless style. Solange in this genre of music is like Vanilla Ice or MC Hammer in gangsta rap. It’s not convincing. Her voice is too weak. Her style is too forced. I’m sorry but she just doesn’t have it.
True, her songs are decent but that’s because she’s got some of the biggest writers and producers in the industry writing her material (i.e. Bilal, Cee Lo, Floetry, Pharrell, Marc Ronson, etc.)

Thanks mztasha30.
But both those stations pander to very limited audiences.
With the influx of 60s style and culture on the scene today (particularly the rock scene…and pop) I just don’t understand how MTV, regular MTV, missed really pushing the video. It LOOKS like a MTV video circa the 80s.
Ironic and just weird.
@ Thisisme,
You make a point. Amy Winehouse (who has an amazing voice despite her crackish ways) can make albums with a 60s sound (what does she have out? like 3 albums now), but Solange whose second LP effort, influenced by the 60s, can’t (so far) grasp the masses’ attention like Amy did. WHY is it? May I hasten a guess? Maybe folks view Amy’s ’sound’ as more authentic because she’s always sounded the way she does? And maybe folks can’t grasp Solange taking on this new sound because it isn’t really…authentic to ‘her’? Dare I say most might take her ‘act’ for a gimmick?
I must be cruel to be kind which is why I posit this. Basically devil’s advocate would say this; would play this up. Much in the same way people flog Rihanna for her ‘rock edge’ sound after two records of ‘ponnin’ the replay on de island in the sun.
Bottom line, folks are resistant to change. It’s human nature. Folks are suspicious and give great-side-eye when situations like this happen. It’s human nature.
Or maybe all in all the record business is SHOT and people will only PAY/PURCHASE for music they truly feel, for artists they truly love and NOT for artists who come out of left field (or right or center) with ’something new’?
Again, devil’s advocate here. Don’t flame me.
Solange is an adept songwriter. She stepped out of the box with something new. Personally I love “I Decided” but I haven’t heard the rest of the record; don’t know when I’ll get around to it and will honestly say to you all that I don’t know if I’ll even purchase it.
Maybe the industry is suffering from dealing with old schoolers like me who only buy records for artists I love and are wont to take a chance on someone new… I will say this. The next record I buy will be Maxwell’s new one. The last record I bought was Santogold. All that to say this: I rarely buy records and because I’m ancient (LOL not really) I don’t do much (if any at all) downloading.
I wish Solange the best. She is certainly NOT a typical R&B chick, especially with this new record so that’s something to be thankful for…no more ’same-o, same-o’.

@ Harlem Chic,
Hmmm, something you’ve said here… Let me ask the forum a question:
Do other ‘out of the box’ artists go around declaring that they are ‘out of the box’? Or are they just ARE? Do they NOT need to decree it to the world? Do you think if Solange hadn’t said “I’m different; I’m retro” and had she just ‘been’ Solange who dresses 60s style occasionally, had there not been all the talk about being different, do you think that would change perception?
I mean everyone EVERYONE is so ‘aware’ of her being different… it’s to the point where fans are defending her saying she’s different and retro and out of the box. BS much? And again, by comparison, Rihanna or heck, Christina during her ‘Dirty’ phase. It’s really a question of authenticity and whether that changes people’s perceptions (and possible record purchases) for the better?

She had an ear piece in her ear and one of the prodcures told the interviewer to “Make sure he asked questions about Jay Z’s album.” And she said she felt it was disrecpectful for them to bring her on TV just to ask questions about her family. It takes a gutts to do that on air and to stand up for your family. Thats what I like about Solange. She is not trying to be something shes not. Think about it, she is already rich so she really has nothing to lose if she dosen’t top charts unlike other artists; hence the nonchanlent attitude.

I dont put up with stank attitudes, not from artist and not from people I know. Solange album didnt do well because her interview was a turn off, she seemed quite stank and to make a video telling people to stop jockin Jay Z was out of hand. I refuse to buy an album and I dont like the artist, and you shouldnt either. Many of you would not patronize an establishment where you received bad service or saw someone being wronged, but you will buy Solange’s album after knowing her attitude? This girl is fake just like her sister, this was her marketing scheme, to come off as “different” and new when in fact Duffy and Amy are doing it better.
I rather support Jazmine Sullivan, Estelle, Santo Gold, or Jhud!

The problem with Solange is that she is desperate to have her own identity; wants so bad to be out of her famous sisters shadow that she is just trying way too hard to be different. Her whole attitude stinks and is turning people off. She needs to be humble during every interview because if her sisters weren’t so famous, nobody would be interested in Solange anyway.

Ok..Just checked out the interview gone wrong. Solo seemed hurt when she stated her displeasure in a monotone voice. She wasn’t rolling her neck or her eyes. I think the male Sly Fox reporter should have allowed the public to draw their own conclusion. Have you ever seen Ted Koppel, Brian Williams, are even Barabra Walters retaliate so viciously when a quest became offended? I realize the black female reporter may have felt slighted but thank God she showed more grace and class the than the unprofessional white male reporter.
Yes, Solo should have vented her frustrations after the interview and not try to embarass the reporter. Don’t make enemies with the media wolfpack (esp. SlyFox News–so called Fair and Balanced? Hell No!) when you don’t have to, Honey.
Reminder…She is an entertainer and not a Rhoades Scholar. Her people should counsel her to avoid borrowing antics from Omarosa’s etiquette file. One must have a thick skin when you proclaim to enjoy being “different” and “out of the box”. Be a lady!

Well they predict 30K sold … which isn’t too bad considering she didn’t have a huge huge single. That gives a a Top 20 debut, which is stronger than her first record. I do not think that’s so bad.

I am not making any excuses for this girl. 30k is pretty bad and is a flop but folks want to make it seem like oh she did ok. Yeah right, she flopped big time. Kelly Rowland did way less promotion and sold 50 some copies more than Solange in her first week, and folks jumped all over her calling her a flop instantley. Don’t cut her slack because she is Beyonce’s sisters. The project FAILED. I doubt if she will do anymore interviews because at this point, no one other that the black blogs are checking for Solange.
Beyonce is the only superstar that will come out of Matthew’s camp.

I didn’t bother read to all the comments, but here is my take… I purchased Solange’s cd. I have yet to sit down & TRULY listened to it, so I can’t give my honest opinion on it yet. However, I think that Solange knew that she would have a major following. I also think that maybe she did not think she would have huge sales. But one thing that she has gotten this time around that she didn’t have the last time is a following & I think that is the most important b/c she will a group of ppl who will luv & purchase her music regardless what the sales charts say. I say if u like the music forget the soundscan & the rest. It’s your money & your ears… do you when it comes to the music YOU like.
As for the news show… yes I do believe that Solange looked like boo boo the fool. For one the anchor lady was LOST… she was speechless trying to figure out what happened to make her upset. Then you hear the producer say what ever was said was not on air. At that point she looked like the angry chic. if she had to tell those ppl somethin… she shoulda said what she had to say AFTER they went off air.

Solange had to correct the anchorman because she said that she heard him mentioning the 40/40 club and beyonce to the woman to include that in her introduction and she thought it was live. So she thought it was necessary to correct her because of them trying yo get a story. Fox News are always talking side ways on folks so you got put your foot down and go texas on them. She got more of Mama Tina’s attitude lol

I havent bought her album but i really liked ‘I decided’ much more than the Freemasons Remix that got played over here in the UK. I thought it was a very fresh sound and I do think that she’s a talented songwriter, not the strongest vocalist but theres something about her voice i like. She acted abominably in quite a few interviews over here and if that directly influenced sales as it probably did, then hopefully its a lesson learned. The entertainment business is too tough for such a blatant lack of humility, and its obvious how little she thinks of the (music-buying) public. That said, i wouldnt care about any of that if her music stood on its own. Whatever Beyonce critics may think of her, that girl knows how far a smile can go, and Solange is only 22, so its not too late for her to late. Everyone loves a comeback!

I like solange , I don’t know what your definition of ghetto and ignorant is but solange don’t fit mine like her sister does, i mean what do you do when you’re offended? it’s not like she yelled at the reporter or called her anything , she just told her that she did not want to answer any beyZ questions which was her right because she was there to promote her album, ill agree her posture was nonchalant, and it was obvious that she does not like fox news [neither should any conscious black person] they are extremely negative [even towards beyonce] and yes racist anyway if attitudes, ignorance and bad behavior should keep people from buying album there is a list of people that would not be famous lets face it you didn’t buy her cd because you are not willing to give anyone in beyonce’s clan a chance its okay to say it no one will judge you as someone said”its your money and your ears”
I bought the cd and its a solid effort, very nice sung, written and produced, i hope she does not see selling 46k the first week as a failure honestely that means that she has 46 thousands people that supports her music and genuinely likes her FOR HER that should be enough
LOve yall

Someone lied to her so i’m not surprised her album is a flop. This is a classic case of privilege gone good.

solange has one of the best cd’s i have ever listened to BUT i do agree that it wont sell, but not mainly because of her attitude. ppl actually like different eg amy winehouse. she has no excuse. her problem is that she is not a vocalist and she sd so herself. her main love is writing. if u are not a vocalist or are not trying to be a vocalist, you need not parade around the world trying to sing just because u can. solange needs serious vocal training. i am undergoing training and i sound tiiiiiimes better than her and as rich as she is, my vocal instructor wld never take her on cuz solange does not have the passion to sing. i listen to her live performances and i can identify so much about her voice and i can tell u this, her throat hurts her so much. thats why she has to use so much water constantly. singing must NEVER be uncomfortable and i can hear the strain in her voice because she does not sing with an open throat. i dont know what kinda lessons she takes or if she takes any at all but it is a widely accepted opinion that solange wld not have made it anywhere with that voice if not for her family. her writing is also a litte over-rated. alot of good songs she was a part of but only after the other writers had already given her a headstart. she cant write a hit single-handedly.

i also have reason to believe that when she performed and let that guy run onstage (who was acting strangely) and danced with him…..that was a publicity stunt. cuz he was acting weird and any sain lady would be more cautious than that. they’d be thinking… suppose he harassed me in some way on live tv?
im thinking it was all a show, and what a show it was!

Where do yall get your info from. Her album debuted at #9

Those idiot reporters tried to set her up. Who wants to be interviewed about things that have nothing to do with your music? Also being on MTV doesnt make your music mainstream. It makes you smart. Ask the Roots if they want to be on MTV if given the chance. Black women always tear other black women down. Its disgusting. Thats why black men date white women. All you guys do is gossip and tear each other down.

and Solange wrote half the songs you guys love from the great Beyonce. She’s been writing hits before she could drive. She is an extremely respected writer in the industry.

Wow what a joyous day for Letoya Luckett. The girl who was booted out of the group is doing very well. Having a successful boutique for the last 6 years isn’t bad. And what’s even more amusing, is her album debuted at number one and went platinum. Kelly’s **** went double wood. Karma is a ***** and very real.
