Syleena Johnson CD Cover+New Single
After a three year hiatus, R n’ B songbird Syleena Johnson is back with a new CD, Chapter 4: Labor Pains, which is due to hit record store shelves in January of 2009 and on Syleena’s own label, Aneely’s Records. The inspiration for the title is said to have come the birth of Syleena’s son, the birth of her own record label and the struggles she has endured an an artist. The first single from the new album is called Shoo Fly, and like many of Syleena’s songs, were written by her and taken from her own personal experiences. “It’s a song about baby momma drama but from the other woman’s perspective: the woman who is actually with the man who has the baby momma drama.” Syleena says.
Other songs on the CD include “My First” and “Is It True”. You can listen to Shoo Fly here and for more information on Syleena or to see a few of her recent performance you can go to www.myspace.com/syleenajohnson or www.youtube.com/syleenajohnson.

She sings the hook to Kanye West’s song All Falls Down and she made some man hating songs a few years ago. I can’t get into her music because it is all the same. Baby mama drama, men ain’t no good, stay away from my man, type of garbage.

I hear she makes good music. I think I will support her and buy this next album. If this is called “Labor Pains” then she musta gone through some stuff!! Sheesh!

I too like her voice. Her second album was sexy as I don’t know what. I’ll probably purchase a few songs on iTunes.

Syleena has been around for some time, but like most great singers, is sooooo underrated… The first album (chapter 1:love, pain & forgiveness) was a solid album, the second (chapter 2: The voice) was good album, but the third album (chapter 3: The Flesh) is the BEST album.. If you go to youtube and search you will find a few interviews were she explains the direction(s) of each album, including the new one (Labor Pains). She grows with each album and conveying emotions in an honest lyrical art form is what she does best..
I see Anon has never taken the time to listen (really listen).. well I would like to take this time and ask that you check her out.. *go to the site I mentioned above and check out some songs*
!!!!!!Nothing but LOVE!!!!!!

I heard some of the new tracks off Syleena’s new album Chapter 4: Labor Pains…
Her voice is amazing (as usual)…and the lyrics are so real……You gotta love Syleena for representing Chi-town right!

I have her first album and yes, her voice is amazing. She is soooo underrated; should receive more love than the biz gives her. Brownsista, thanks for highlighting Syleena.

1st let me say I love her music…”Im Your Women” and the whole Chapter 3 album is my favorite I cant wait to get Chapter 4 Freedom is my favorite song so far (if you go to her myspace.com/syleenajohnson page you can hear some of the songs off the new CD)…
2nd Anon I dont think you have really given her music a chance because all her songs are not man hate songs…however if you read some of her interviews you will see that most of singles were chosen because they were R. Kelly songs and also most of those songs were not songs she wrote. People dont know that shes a writer and most of what she writes comes from her life or what she has seen in other lives around her. You have to read up on her to really understand the story behind her music unlike most people her songs often reflect her life and some of the love and pain she has had and her life…
Before you judge you have to have the whole story.

Always been a fan of Syleena Johnson. I love what I’ve heard so far from Chapter 4.
For those who don’t know who she is…get to know her music. If you like R&B, you’ll like Syleena Johnson. She actually makes meaningful music and tells the hard truth about love, womanhood, and being a human being. Don’t get it twisted. She doesn’t hate men. That’s just what people decide to focus on.
She progresses with every album. Chapter 2 is my favorite. I challenge anyone to listen to her new song Freedom and not be moved by that song. Even Shoo Fly…everyone can relate to that in some form or fashion.

Well, it’s good to see she’s back on the scene. I’ll check out some of her new material to show support {for REAL talent}.

I met her in New Orleans, three months b4 katrina. She told my husband at the time that she’d beat him up if he didn’t treat me right! -love her!!!

Checked out her youtube. The videos for her labor pains song and Shoo Fly took me there and they were funny. And she has a killer voice. She sounds amazing live…that’s the big test.
After hearing this, I’ll be checking for her Labor Pains CD.

Syleena Johnson has a voice from GOD! She is truly an artist that I can listen to her entire albums (all 3 chapters). She is telling a story about her journey as a Christian woman in this world. She has been through alot as we all have and she is just sharing her story.
Oliver - listen to all 3 chapters from beginning to end - I doubt you will be bored
I even love her remakes - If You Play Your Cards Right!!!
True R&B sanger ;-)

@ Harlem Chic
She is a R Kelly protege from Chicago. I remember BET played her videos when I was still watching in the 90’s. She is a true Blues singer hence all of the “man done wrong and girl you bet’ step off” relationship songs. She has a GREAT voice and is not a screamer.
I am sure her fans have uploaded her songs and videos on YouTube. Take a minute to find her website and read her bio. She is worth the effort.

Her voice is amazing! I was listening to chapter 2 and 1 today. Her record company did not promote her at all. Im from Chicago and you only heard a few of her songs on the radio. Her CD’s tell a story from beginning to end. listen to chapter two track 2,4 and 10 the lyrics are beautiful.

Syleena is one of the most under-rated artists around. she has a beautiful soulful voice, its just sad that she doesn’t get enough recognition as the people that have half her talent! She left us hanging with that song HYPNOTIC i cant wait to hear her new work!

This is one of my favorite artist. She is a true singer and very under-rated. I will purchase anything she sings.

doesn’t this song remind you of mokenstef “he’s mine”…….ya’ll know what i’m talking about! lmao. that was a jam but if you hear the lyrics you’ll be like “both ya’ll dumb, dude-o is clearly no good!” lol. but syleena is cool with me.
Monica said,
I couldn’t agree more with most of the comments here. She has an amazing voice and sounds even better live…a real singer. She sings from experience and for grown folks, so you need to have gone through some things to really get Syleena Johnson.
Based on what I’ve heard so far from her Chapter 4 cd.
Tezzy Bear, this song is more like Jill Scott’s Getting In the Way. He’s Mine is a song about a man who stepped out on his woman and now this woman who only had him “once” keeps trying to get him. That’s dumb.
Shoo Fly has nothing to do with infidelity or a one night stand. It’s a woman letting the previous woman know that she needs to get real…stop using the child as a pawn…and leave her husband alone (unless it has to do with his child).
Sometimes one woman has to put another woman in her place. That’s why I think it’s more like Jill Scott’s song. She was giving the other woman a verbal warning rather than initially being stupid or ignorant.
Kitten said,
Syleena is definitely underrated! Her voice is incredible and no all of her songs are not man hating babymamma drama songs. I love her voice and I have her cds if you don’t know her you need to step your game up and get a clue the girl is good!!!!
tezzy bear said,
@ monica
oh…..well that song fits well too. matter of fact i like jill scott “getting in the way”. that was a baddddd video( i mean that in a good way). and yes the mokenstef joint was dumb (as far as the whole story of the song goes).
Jazzie said,
It’s not the other woman’s role to tell the ex to stay in her place. That’s the main reason why men don’t bother stepping up and taking responsibility, women fight too damn much. Let the man tell his previous woman to SIT THE F*CK DOWN and GET OVER THE PAST RELATIONSHIP. That’s why these guys don’t grow. I couldn’t stand the message of “Gettin In The Way” for the same reason, if you’re so secure about your man’s love why “warn” the other chick? Your man is grown enough to know who he’s with and what he’s supposed to and know his limits, if Igotta play with a man I don’t want him. You never see guys go warning other guys even if they come to you knowing you got a man, you’re the one who’s supposed to be faithful to your man and know the limits as well.
Jazzie said,
I meant : If I gott play the police with a man….
Monica said,
Jazzie, I see what you’re saying and it makes sense. But it’s actually deeper than that. On the “surface” it looks like the woman overstepping her boundaries and being controlling and not letting a man be the man. But a lot of times it has more to do with the woman than the man. A man can stand up to his responsibility and tell a woman he doesn’t want her and mean every word of it.
But sometimes a woman has to hear things come from another woman so she completely understands. A woman has to put a woman in her place and nip it in the bud.
Jill Scott said she did that for herself…not for her man. From the sounds of Shoo Fly, Syleena Johnson did that for the same reasons.
Monica said,
@ tezzy bear, yes the video for getting in the way was the business

stop please, stop please, Syleena Johnson is amazing, talented, and a great songwriter. She can sing her *** off, true talent, all artist sing about different subjects, rappers sing about women as whores, *******, some sing about great subjects, like real life, soul singers sing about love, hate, disrespect, politics, everday things, thats what creativity and free speech is about, lets not forget publicity likes negative, hate, racism and the look, skinny people, Syleena is a real full figured woman who can saaaaaang. we need real singers, real subjects, real artist who are not worrried about size, race. she is a family woman, with husband and child, and writes about real stuff. but most of all she can really sing. come on people buy her cds and listen and then go out and and spread the word and buy her next cd. i am tired of fake artist and fake publicity let your voices be heard.
bigred said,
to the person who said syleena’s music is boring. you obviously dont know anything about life, or your life is boring. this woman can sing and she sings about real life issues, her music is beautiful like her voice. my mother use to say if you dont have nothing nice to say, dont say nothing. i am gonna try and say nothing now, bye
