My three favorite actresses, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, and Gabrielle Union will all grace the December cover of Essence Magazine. The three sistas come together to talk about men, the lack of quality roles for Black women in Hollywood, and their dislike of gossip blogs- especially those run by Black women. Gabrielle Union, who has been taken to task by gossip blogs for supposedly partying too much, is especially ticked off about what is said about her and laments how painful it is to have your own community tearing you down. “And now because everyone is clamoring for celebrity tidbits, the bigger gossip sites and even mainstream entities are picking up on it. No fact-checking, no nothing. And in one week’s time, there were like five different dudes, a baby—I’m a homewrecker. In literally seven days. I can’t point the finger at the White media. They don’t care about us. Paparazzi are not staked out in front of any of our houses. They are not going through our garbage because they don’t care about us in that way. So when you hear crap about us, it is coming from our own community, which hurts.“.

Just like Ashanti, singer Alicia Keys has an album to promote and with that promotion comes photo shoots and magazine covers. Alicia will be doing double duty for the month of November, covering not one but two (and possibly more) magazines. You can see Alicia strike a provocative pose for the cover of Marc Ecko’s Complex magazine and an even more beautiful shot of Alicia was used for her Ebony cover. November is obviously destined to be Alicia’s month as her new CD, As I Am, comes out on the 13th. Her first single, No One, is already a top 20 Billboard hit and is doing just as well on the digital sales chart (Itunes).

Foxy Brown isn’t letting a little thing like jail stand in her way of making music. The sista has released her first single, We Will Not Surrender, and to your right is what I am told is the cover art for that single. What can I say? The sista looks good. As many of you know, poor Inga Marchand will be “away” for the next year as a result of her breaking the terms of her probation. It seems the moment she was locked up her label decided to rush her single to capitalize off of the media attention. However I don’t think it’s going to work. With Foxy away she can’t promote her single and album in any way and going to jail to pump up album sales doesn’t work anymore and honestly should have never worked.

Janet fans have speculated for months now that Janet would leave Virgin Records for Island Def Jam and that appears to be exactly what is happening. 20 Y.O was Janet’s last album under contract with Virgin and now reports are circulating that L.A. Reid, President of IDJ, is down in Miami personally overseeing the new album which is rumored to have production from long time collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, as well as Pharell and Ne-Yo. No word yet whether Jermaine Dupri, Janet’s boyfriend, will be contributing tracks to the new project.

Eve: The Last Female Rapper. Was I dream-ing? Nope. That’s what the promotional flier said. How could that be? How could rap music, an art form that isn’t even 40 years old yet, end up with only one female MC left? Well to be honest- the producers of these fliers were taking great liberties by calling Eve the last female rapper. She isn’t so much the last as she is the only one that hasn’t released an album lately that flopped. Eve has been MIA from the rap scene for a while now, but if my memory serves me correctly- her last album didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Still, the idea that Eve was the last female MC left got me to wondering where exactly did all the female rappers go?

The Costume Institute Gala held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art last night brought out all the pretty people decked out in their Sunday best. Naomi Campbell, Alicia Keys and Rihanna were just a few of the sistas who showed up for the event and they represented Black Beauty magnificently.
