Rihanna Helps + Meagan Good Walks

Fashion icon (yes she is worthy of that title) Rihanna did her part to help fight the spread of AIDS by showing up at H&M to sign copies of her “Believe” t-shirt. Rihanna teamed up with trendy store to launch the “Fashion Against AIDS” collection, which will feature t-shirts for guys and girls, with slogans like “Stop and “Think” and “Believe”. The new line will be available in H&M’s Divided departments starting February 2008 and prices are expected to range from $12 to $34, with 25 percent of the sales from the collection going to HIV/AIDS-prevention projects around the world.

… And I Should Care Because?

A few days ago I got an interesting e-mail from a man who says his name is Brian. Brian for some reason came to this site, used my contact form, and sent me a very lengthy e-mail explaining to me why he hates and refuses to date Black women. Brian titled his e-mail “My Confession”. Brian contacted me, a Black woman who runs a site in support of other Black women, to confess his dislike of us. Why? Why me? What made this man come to Brown Sista, see what I do and then feel his confession would be of interest to me? What exactly was Brian trying to accomplish with his e-mail and why was he trying to accomplish it with the very type of woman he claimed to despise- A Black Woman?

Angela Bassett Meets The Browns

Rick Fox & Angela Bassett As hard as it is to believe, Angela Bassett, one of the most gifted Black actresses of our time, hasn’t had a starring role in any film since she last appeared in the Rosa Parks Story, a television movie, back in 2002. And though she had a role in last year’s Akeelah and the Bee, it was in the supporting capacity and in no way showcased her amazing abilities as an actress. Angela’s dry spell is about to end however as Tyler Perry has wisely cast her in the lead role of his next film, Meet The Browns.

A Fan’s Review Of Whitney’s Comeback Performance

Whitney As reported here last week, singer Whitney Houston made her long awaited return to the stage at yesterday’s Live & Loud Music Festival in Malaysia. Before I went to bed last night at least one review had been posted online by a fan who said they were at the concert. By the time I woke up this morning and checked my email- there were several and none of them were very flattering. Honestly, I never expected Whitney to be her old self vocally and that is why I believe she launched her comeback overseas rather than here in America. However, I didn’t expect the reviews of her voice to be so sad either. According to Mr Manager’s Blog the Whitney of old is gone.

Nia, Gabrielle & Sanaa Cover Essence

Nia-Sanaa-Gabrielle My three favorite actresses, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, and Gabrielle Union will all grace the December cover of Essence Magazine. The three sistas come together to talk about men, the lack of quality roles for Black women in Hollywood, and their dislike of gossip blogs- especially those run by Black women. Gabrielle Union, who has been taken to task by gossip blogs for supposedly partying too much, is especially ticked off about what is said about her and laments how painful it is to have your own community tearing you down. And now because everyone is clamoring for celebrity tidbits, the bigger gossip sites and even mainstream entities are picking up on it. No fact-checking, no nothing. And in one week’s time, there were like five different dudes, a baby—I’m a homewrecker. In literally seven days. I can’t point the finger at the White media. They don’t care about us. Paparazzi are not staked out in front of any of our houses. They are not going through our garbage because they don’t care about us in that way. So when you hear crap about us, it is coming from our own community, which hurts..

American Gangster’s Portrayal Of Black Women

I meant to post a Talk To Me Tuesday article yesterday but totally forgot. I know we pretty much have a free for all on Tuesdays but I wanted to devote yesterday’s segment to the movie American Gangster and it’s portrayal of Black women. I have not seen the movie but have read a great a deal about what people think of it on my forum. Quite a few complaints were about the way sistas were portrayed as appose to how the film’s only non sista, the character of Denzel’s wife, was portrayed.

Pepa Celebrates The Big 4-3

Sandra “Pepa” Denton Celebrates Her 43rd Birthday Sandra “Pepa” Denton celebrated her forty-third birthday yesterday at the Brava Nightclub in Puerto Rico. Pepa’s b-day jam was proceeded by a pool party at the grand opening of the New El San Juan Hotel & Casino. Her partner in rhyme, Cheryl “Salt” James was in attendance, as was Gabrielle Union, singer Nick Lachay, and his gal pal, Vanessa Mannillo. Party pics can be seen on the next page- and wow, can you believe Pepa is actually 43 years old? Nose job or not, the sista looks good.

Janet’s Return !

Janet Jackson It’s happening. It’s really going to happen. One sure sign that a celebrity has a product to promote is when you start seeing them showing up at random events. Of course we saw Janet last week, she was promoting Why Did I Get Married. But promotion is over and yet Janet shows no signs of going back into seclusion. Janet has already stated that her new album will be coming out in the first quarter of of 2008, which leads me to believe she might be dropping a new single any day now. Janet was out last night taking in the Hollywood Film Festival’s 11th Annual Hollywood Awards and she looked fabulous. Janet is keeping slim and trim these days which is also another sign of an impending single. If you are longtime Janet fan you know not to get your hopes up too high, but with a new label, new look, hit movie and new book all dropping around the same time, I can’t help but get just a little excited.

TTMT: Sistas Not Supporting Obama

Barack Obama It has been a few few weeks since I last posted a Talk Me Tuesday feature and so today I have decided to bring it back, with the direct intent of talking about Barack Obama and the media’s assertion that sistas are not supportive of him. First, let me start by saying that I do not believe the polls, and though they vary depending on who is conducting them, the overall consensus is that sistas, and brothas to a lesser degree, do not support this man of color and his Black wife. Now I call Barack a man of color and not Black, because his biracial-ness, according to the media, has caused some Black people to question his overall Blackness.

Ashanti Pushes Album Back To 2008

Ashanti Album push backs are becoming extremely popular as Ashanti can now add her name to the growing list of female singers having their album release dates either pushed back or postponed indefinitely. Appearing on the Doug Banks Show today, Ashanti confirmed that her “Declaration” will not see the light of day until sometime in early 2008. No actual release date was given however. Ashanti also confirmed that no video for her first single, Hey Baby, has been shot as previously reported. And though Ashanti probably won’t admit it, I think her label is re-evaluating their decision to release Hey Baby as the first single and rightfully so. The song is too similar in sound to that of Diddy and Keyshia Cole’s “Last Night”, and because of that radio will most likely not play it. By new years a new single will most likely be chosen, and fans will have long since forgotten about Hey Baby.

Janet Promoting WDIGM

Janet Jackson Singer Janet Jackson has been criss-crossing the country all this week promoting her new film Why Did I Get Married. Janet made two stops in New York on Thursday, appearing on Good Morning America with Tyler Perry, and later on taping a segment of 106 & Park with both Tyler and Jill Scott. Why Did I Get Married opens today nationwide and sistas especially should support this film. Tyler’s last film to star a Black woman, Daddy’s Little Girls, with Gabrielle Union didn’t do so well at the theaters leading many to believe Black America won’t support a Tyler film without the Madea character. Let’s prove them wrong and show our support for not only Tyler but for the many Black actresses that he gives opportunities to.

Dawn Robinson: Down- But Not Out

Wow! That’s what I thought when I watched this video clip of former En Vogue member, Dawn Robinson. Dawn, as I had heard years ago, has fallen on financial hard times and is apparently sleeping on the floor of a rodent infested apartment- with her husband. Now, we have all heard this story before, singer hits it big, loses it all, blah, blah, blah. However, the fact that Dawn is living this way while married shocks me. Her husband, Dre something-or-the-other, is also an up and coming singer and one that apparently cannot take care of his wife. But I’m getting a little head of myself here. I’ll come back to Dre later. This clip I speak of, which you can see on the next page, is actually from what I was told is a reality show that the couple is shooting about their attempts to break back into the music business.

Miss Jackson As Miss Ross

Janet Jackson I believe these photos were taken back in 2003 when Janet Jackson was rumored to be portraying Lena Horne in her biopic. These pics were suppose to showcase her looking very Lena like, but to me, I saw Diana Ross, not Lena Horne. The photo above in particular always looked very Diana, circa Lady Sings The Blues… or was it Mahogany? Well I can’t remember which one if was but I do know it was pre-big-hair Diana. Back in the 70’s Diana was rocking her own hair in her movies and I loved it. She seemed real. Same goes for these pics of Janet. It’s rare to see sistas showcasing their own lovely locks, but when they do, it is a sight to behold. And even though Janet may have a few extra tracks in there, this is still probably one of the most natural photo shoots I have ever seen of her.

Keyshia Cole Performs At Pepsi Smash Live

Keyshia Cole I’ll admit it, I was never really a Keyshia Cole fan but I think as of late I may be converting over to one. Her first album didn’t particularly touch me and I thought her attitude was abysmal. It wasn’t until after I saw a few episodes of her reality show on BET that I stopped turning my nose up at this sista and instead started trying to relate to her. Shortly after that I caught her performing her hit single, Love, on 106 & Park and every since then I have sorta been feeling her style. You have all heard the Mary J. comparisons by now but Keyshia only reminds me of Mary in the slightest of ways. They are both soul singers from rough backgrounds who have a strong attachment to overly bleached blond hair (lol), but other than those two things I see nothing else they really have in common… musically at least.
