Best of 2008: Show Stopper of the Year

With amazing style and class, this ageless brown sista worked it out this year. From award shows to Paris Fashion Week to movie premieres, Kerry made certain she always maintained her elegance in the most fabulous gown and fashionable pieces, like her grape and beige geometric-printed Missoni jumpsuit. With her show-stopping style, Kerry is always the best dressed at any event. Whether she takes it up a notch, or brings it down a bit, she never disappoints.

From left to right, Kerry wears:  a lovely mulit-floral gown from Oscar de la Renta’s Pre-Fall 2008 collection; a gorgeous soft peach Roberto Cavalli gown; strapless Oscar de la Renta red and ivory gown; a black Marchesa Resort 2009 gown, with jeweled embellishments, and chiffon overlay.

Best of 2008: Style Maven of the Year

British-born actress, Thandie Newton, wowed not only me, but tons of red carpet fashion addicts this year. Always a trendy dresser, and muse to designer Giles Deacon, the award-winning actress has it all. From gorgeous gowns, to her enviable shoe collection, Thandie is definitely a style maven. Her youthful style consists of killer heels and ‘up-to-there’ dresses, showing off one of her best assets — her legs.

From left to right, Thandie wears:  a lace overlay Temperley design; a floral printed Matthew Williamson mini-dress with Giuseppe Zanotti sandals; a belted canary yellow sack dress with black Jimmy Choo heels; a white Chanel Resort 2009 mini, with floral detailing, and Christian Louboutin pumps; a white Marios Schwab dress with pearl-web detailing and silver strappy sandals.

Best of 2008: Fashionista of the Year

Rihanna is the ultimate fashionista. She can work the hell out of a slinky Gucci gown, a quirky Zac Posen party dress complete with plume feathers and ruffles, knee-high Balenciaga sandals, or even a conductor hat! Besides fashion, Rihanna is a huge beauty buff — you can always find her in the hottest nail colors and trends and hairstyles like her amazing cropped cuts that had brown sistas saving the nearest salon on speed dial, trying to keep up with all her different do’s. She she wore — mushroom, piecey, curled, sweeped, slicked, fluffed, burgundy, brown, jet black, silver hair streaks…the list goes on!

Best of 2008: Most Consistent

The most all-around consistent brown sista this year is Alicia Keys. The stunning musician toured the entire year, but never missed a beat when it came to red carpet events. She won plenty of awards at each award show she attended, and re-released her 2007 record, As I Am. Aside from her music, Alicia’s style was so on point. Her hair, make-up, outfits — everything was just spectacular.

From left to right, Alicia wears:  a black and white beaded blazer with black jeans, YSL platform boots, and a white python clutch by Salvatore Ferragamo; a strapless foil printed black gown with a sweetheart neckline; a strapless blue Moschino gown and pink Zufi Alexander clutch; a grey Calvin Klein turtleneck dress with Sergio Rossi heels; a tangerine colored Catherine Malandrino top with Akademik jeans and brown Giuseppe Zanotti pumps — oh, and a fab pair of Louis Vuitton ‘Millionaire Sunglasses’ designed by Pharell Williams.

Best of 2008: Most Improved

Both style-wise and musically, Ashanti has shown lots of improvement this year. She released her latest album, The Declaration, and proved to everyone that she is a great singer with a stong voice. The new conservative and grown-up style she tried out worked amazingly well in her favor, but she made certain not to ditch the glamorous gowns and pieces from some of her fave designers, like Marchesa.

Left to right, Ashanti wears: a diamond embellished black Marchesa gown, an off-white Thierry Mugler mini-dress with detailed lattice mesh at the chest and rib area, a belted floral Balenciaga summer dress and electric blue Christian Louboutin pointy-toe pumps, and a ruffled asymmetrical LBD with patent leather two-tone pumps.

Best of 2008: Most Conservative Style

Gabrielle Union is a very conservative sista when it comes to her red carpet look. It’s always clean and tasteful. With the added romance curls and patent leather peep-toe pumps, I’d say her Dolce & Gabbana LBD (3rd photo) is the most sexy of these photos. When she arrived at the Cadillac Records L.A. Premiere a few weeks ago, Gabi wowed many, as she embodied pure elegance in a navy satin Reem Acra Grecian-style gown.

Best of 2008: Most Unique Style

Solange has had a very exciting year. She released her sophomore album, ‘Sol-Angel & The Hadley Street Dreams’, and shot some amazing videos to go along. Though she sometimes drives a stake through my heart with her “unique” ensembles, I have to admit that she is a great dresser, and has an amazingly broad sense of style.

Best of 2008: Model of the Year

The 25 y.o. Caymanian New Yorker turned supermodel is one of the fiercest brown sistas to ever grace a runway. Prior to her role as a Victoria’s Secret Angel, Selita’s modelling debut officially took place in February 2001 at the fall Tuleh fashion show in New York. She later went on to walk for Catherine Malandrino, James Coviello, and Baby Phat, before signing a contract with Victoria’s Secret in 2005 and walking for Christian Siriano’s September 2008 show in New York.
