It’s raining in New York. A hot, muggy, gray rain that splashes in heavy sheets off the line of black Escalades parked outside a photo studio on the West Side. Just a few weeks ago, Hurricane Ike brought far more relentless rains to Houston, destroying the neighborhood where Beyoncé Knowles grew up. Oddly, her favorite memory is tied to a similar meteorological disaster almost 20 years ago. “I never told anyone this story, but we lived by the bayou, and it flooded,” she explains. “My father came to pick me up from school. I thought he was so strong. And he protected me. We had to get out of the car because the water was flooding the streets. He was carrying me around and it was the most fun thing in the world. My arms were around his neck and I was laughing and it was raining, and I was like, this is great! Even though, looking back, I know he was terrified.” Read the rest of this entry »

I decided to edit this post to share the latest Billboard news concerning Beyonce’s first single, If I Were A Boy. For those of you who read my post a few days ago, you know that If I Were A Boy was released on iTunes last week and quickly shot to the top of the charts. Generally when a song has strong digital sales it will go #1 and artsists like T.I. and Rihanna have been beneficiaries of this trend quite often. Unfortunately, Beyonce has not. If I Were Boy did fly up to the charts but two singles by T.I. stopped it from reaching pole position. So as of this week, Billboard Magazine shows Beyonce sitting in third place on the Hot 100, behind Whatever You Like by T.I. and Live Your Life by T.I and Rihanna. Does this mean If I Were A Boy won’t go #1? Nope. It simply means that it won’t go #1 this week. However, with a rise in airplay and steady downloads- the song could still make it to the top next week or within the coming weeks. Read the rest of this entry »

Beyonce’s alter-ego, Sasha Fierce, made her world wide debut last night at the Power 105.1 Powerhouse Concert. Not originally scheduled to perform, Beyonce/Sasha, took to the stage midway through the Jay-Z performance and accompanied by her backup dancers, performed a shortened version of her hit song, Single Ladies. Dressed in a black catsuit and rocking her signature pulled back do, Beyonce performed for all of one minute, before throwing up the ROC sign and walking off the stage. Read the rest of this entry »

Beyonce has spoken extensively about the weight she had to gain to play jazz legend Etta James in the upcoming film Cadillac Records. However, the majority of movie stills that have been released from the film so far show a very svelte Beyonce draped in vintage 1950s dresses. With a bit of detective work however, I was able to find images of the singer playing Etta in her heavier and obviously drugged addicted days. In the stills on the next page, Beyonce is clearly shown depicting Etta at a not so hight point in her life. When Beyonce landed the role of the singer, Etta said she approved of the casting of Beyonce, but doubted the singer could pull off the grittier aspects of her life on the big screen. Wilson from BlackFilm.com was nice enough to send BrownSista movie stills from Gabrielle Union and Beyonce Knowles’ new film, Cadillac Records. As previously reported, the film revolves around Leonard Chess (Adrian Brody), the founder of Chess Records, a company that was responsible for launching the careers of many blues musicians during the 1950s and 60s. Beyonce landed the coveted role of Etta James, while Gabrielle Union won the role of Geneva Wade, girlfriend to blues legend, Muddy Waters, played by Jeffrey Wright. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters December 5th. Read the rest of this entry »

Singers Keyshia Cole and Ashanti celebrated their birthday last night with a joint party held at the Area Nighclub in Bevery Hills, California. Ashanti was on hand for her party, as were actresses Tamala Jones and Meagan Good. The only face not seen was that of Keyshia herself. Wonder what kept her from her own party? Anyway, other Brown Sistas spotted out and about were singer Beyonce who hit up the soon to be cancelled TRL to debut her two new videos, Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) and If I Were A Boy. Expect to see a lot more of both Beyonce and Meagan Good in the coming weeks as both have huge projects to promote. Beyonce will be promoting her double disc set I Am Beyonce/I Am Sasha, while Meagan will be promoting the fifth and final installment of the Saw (movie) franchise, which hits theaters on October 31st. When it rains Beyonce news it pours. ABC news is now reporting that singer Beyonce Knowles has gotten the go ahead and has been cast to play singer/actress Eartha Kitt in an upcoming biopic about the singer’s life: “Singer and actress Beyonce Knowles recently received the greenlight to play legendary Eartha Kitt in a biopic of the singer’s life. Her sex-kitten nighclub act with that signature throaty performance helped Kitt rise to fame. She is perhaps best known for her role as Catwoman in the 1960s “Batman” series. During her career, Kitt endured a 10-year blacklisting owing to her sharp criticism of the Vietnam War. Today, the 79-year-old singer is battling colon cancer. She told the New York Post, “I never expect anything to happen to me. “I’m the healthiest person in the world.” Read the rest of this entry »

Strip away the flawless makeup, belly-baring fashions and superstar image of Beyoncé Knowles, and you’ll find a down-to-earth young woman who just wants the chance to be herself.
ESSENCE: I’ve heard that you and your mom are rather close. Is that true?
Beyonce Knowles: You know what’s so beautiful about our relationship? Some mothers are your friends, some mothers are strictly your mother, some mothers are both. Some mothers know when to draw the line, some mothers know when to tell you when you’re wrong and when you’re right. Some mothers don’t tell you when you’re right. (My mother) knows when to be my friend. And growing up, she knew when to be my mother. Read the rest of this entry »
