Latavia Roberson Want To Make A Musical Comeback

Former Destiny’s Childsinger LaTavia Roberson has enjoyed her time away from the limelight. Back in 2000, during the midst of a whirlwind promotional tour for their sophomore album ‘The Writing’s on the Wall,’ Roberson and LeToya Luckett attempted to sever their management agreement with Mathew Knowles. They claimed Beyonce’s father favored his daughter and that he was keeping too much of the group’s profits.

Roberson and Luckett were then ousted from the group, replaced in their “Say My Name” music video with Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin who lip-synched to their background vocals. The two founding members then sued father and daughter Knowles, as well as group member Kelly Rowland. Both parties slung dirt during a back-and-forth media blitz, but the lawsuits ended up being settled out of court and Roberson and Luckett were said to have made a pretty penny. A non-disclosure agreement prohibits them from discussing the settlement.

Despite claims from Rowland and Knowles that Roberson and Luckett couldn’t sing, the two formed a new group called Anjel-right around the same time that Destiny’s Child kicked Franklin out of the group and became a tri0. Signed to a production deal with Jagged Edge, the group’s failure to launch caused them to disband. Luckett embarked on a solo music career and Roberson decided to retreat and do some soul searching.

Keyshia Tells It Like It Is

Keyshia Cole Keyshia Cole is a woman of few words… but she lays it all out on the line on her reality series ‘The Way It Is,’ which premiered on BET July 12.

The six-part series chronicles the turbulent upbringing and promising career of one of today’s most promising R&B acts. Starting in her hometown of East Oakland, California, viewers discover how the hip-hop soul singer escaped the pressures of the inner city, and later returned to sell out venues and headline her own cross-country tour.

“I don’t know what they are going to get out of it,” Cole, 24, told Black Voices about the viewing audience. “I don’t know. They are going to get whatever they get. I can’t tell you. I think it’s a nice show, I do.”

On the James Dubose-helmed series, the platinum-selling artist, who topped the R&B charts with a trio of hit songs over the past year (including the Gregory Curtis-produced ballad ‘Love’), discusses her mother’s battles with drug addiction, her sister’s life as a prostitute, and her childhood spent in and out of foster care.

Rihanna: Caribbean Queen

Two years ago, she was just another Bajan girl with a dream. Now 18-year-old singer Rihanna is poised to become pop’s next superstar.

Eighteen-year-old Rihanna is lying on the backyard lawn of a private bungalow at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica, California, her arm artfully propping up her head. As a dozen or so people buzz in and out of her personal space, measuring the light, pushing a strand of hair from her forehead, touching up her lipstick, she remains joyful and completely unfazed, even though there’s a camera less than twelve inches from her face.

“Gorgeous, Rihanna!” coos the photographer while the pop sensation locks glances with her friend Dara, who’s watching from the patio. First, she crosses one of her penetrating, cat-shaped eyes, then the other, then both. Over the next several hours, she will have her hair reshaped into a tousled cascade of locks, sip Coca-Cola and nibble on potato chips and chicken wings (hot sauce on the side), all while chatting on the phone (which chirps with her own “Break It Off” or Beyoncé’s “Check on It” ringtone). Even though she has the number one song on the Billboard 100 chart (“SOS”), plus a sex-soaked video running in heavy rotation on MTV (“Unfaithful”), Rihanna is still just a playful, goofy teenager.
