What Black Women Want

With word that Vibe Vixen would be no more after the Aug/Sept edition, folks are once again scratching their heads and wondering why so many magazines aimed at Black women seem to fail. Granted, few magazines are ever geared towards sisters, but in the last 3 years, 3 of the most visible to do so, have ceased publication: Vixen, Honey and Suede. Now in the past I have written about exactly why I believe Honey folded, but Suede came and went so fast that I never even saw it, while Vixen was an on again- off again project that just never really took off.

Inside Vibe Vixen’s Final Issue

Final Vixen As previously reported, Vibe Vixen has released it’s final issue with Rihanna on the cover, and in true Vibe style, they sent me my digital and print issues weeks late. I am somewhat forgiving though as this issue doesn’t appear to be half as boring as many of the others. Hoping to go out with a bang, Vixen not only featured Rihanna on the cover and in an amazing fashion spread, but also had a great round table discussion with various women in the entertainment field about the representation of Black women in the media and even threw in a little scandal by featuring a very in depth interview with Karrine Steffans. Oh, and did I mention fellow Brown Sista blogger, Natasha Eubanks of YBF, is also featured in the magazine?

Vibe Vixen Ceases Publication

In a press release sent out yesterday, Steven Aaron, who was recently named CEO of Vibe Media Group, said the magazine would cease production with the August/September issue which features Rihanna on the cover. Vixen was a magazine I only became hipped to recently and I subscribed to it for the sole purpose of scanning the articles and pictures for this site. I will miss Vixen slightly, mainly because it gave sistas who weren’t Essence material a place to be seen an heard. Now that Vixen has folded what other magazine made for sistas will feature artists like Keyshia Cole and Mya on the cover? It is times like this that I truly miss Honey Magazine.

Kelly Rowland’s Skin Problems

Kelly Rowland Nope, we are not talking about skin acne but rather skin color. Kelly tells Essence magazine that while growing up she was very self conscious about her skin color until Tina Knowles, Beyonce’s Mama, told her how beautiful she was. Kelly laments the problems of being a brown sista and the theory that too dark women cannot sell magazines or music. I agree that there has always been a rule for magazines not to put brown women on their covers for fear they wouldn’t sell, but that wasn’t the case with music, until recently. Remember the 80’s produced Janet Jackson, Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills and Whitney Houston.

Ciara, Tracee, Garcelle & More

Today’s random celebrity sightings post consists of some of my favorite brown sistas. From Janet Jackson to Melyssa Ford, we have Black Women from all walks of Hollywood life covered. First up however is Keyshia Cole who held her album release party last night. Keyshia is sporting a new shorter do that I really like and it reminds me quite a bit of Rihanna’s new shorter style. Hopefully both these ladies will usher in a less in more look for celebrity sistas when it come to their hair.

The Body Shop

Brazil Nut Body Butter After years of hearing about The Body Shop I finally decided to visit their website and give a few of their products a try. In the past I had heard their body butters were to die for and rumor even has it that Jennifer Lopez used her pull to get one of their shops to open up after hours just so she could buy a few cases of the legendary cream before leaving the country. But it wasn’t the name J-Lo that got me to purchase their creams. Instead it was the rave reviews of friends, family and dozens of acquaintances online who finally led me to try this line of beauty products.

So What’cha Think?

About the new color of the website that is? I was really tired of the pink but didn’t want to totally change themes so I decided to just change the font and the main font color. Singer Rihanna is actually responsible for the new look. When I saw her album cover I immediately fell in love with the dark turquoise text and knew it would be my next chosen color. For those interested, the cursive font is Black Jack and the hex color is #1C8694.

Garcelle Beauvais Poses For Playboy

It seems Garcelle Beauvais is following in the footsteps of another Black actress, Stacey Dash, and is taking it all off for the pages Playboy Magazine. According to Playboy’s Cyber Club, Garcelle has posed for the August issue of the men’s magazine which hits news stands at the beginning of July. Garcelle is probably best known for her role as Fancy on the Jamie Foxx Show. The sista however started her career off as a model and I believe she has been on the cover of Essence magazine more times than any other model. Garcelle ruled the pages of many Black fashion magazines before she set her sights on Hollywood in the late eighties.
