Strip away the flawless makeup, belly-baring fashions and superstar image of Beyoncé Knowles, and you’ll find a down-to-earth young woman who just wants the chance to be herself.
ESSENCE: I’ve heard that you and your mom are rather close. Is that true?
Beyonce Knowles: You know what’s so beautiful about our relationship? Some mothers are your friends, some mothers are strictly your mother, some mothers are both. Some mothers know when to draw the line, some mothers know when to tell you when you’re wrong and when you’re right. Some mothers don’t tell you when you’re right. (My mother) knows when to be my friend. And growing up, she knew when to be my mother.

Not completely BrownSista related, but I loved the cover so much I had to post it. Nothing is more beautiful to me than a Black man with his child and this cover of Usher gracing the August 2008 edition of Essence Magazine, brought a huge smile to my face. It seems like just yesterday Usher was on the cover with his wife Tameka Foster-Raymond, and now the Editors of the oldest magazine in circulation for Brown Sistas, have chosen to give the singer a cover with his son as well. And let it be duly noted that I predicted months ago that the first magazine to get official pics of Usher’s son would be Essence. In the issue you can expect the usual. I’ll admit it- I haven’t really paid much attention to Tyra Banks in years and don’t really watch either of her television shows. Still, Tyra is Brown Sista Icon and so when she does something noteworthy I am more than happy to showcase it here. Such is the case with Tyra covering the February 2008 edition of Essence Magazine. And it is not so much Tyra landing the cover, something she done twice previously, but rather what she talks about in her interview with Jeannine Turner. It seems Tyra is none to happy with the opportunities for Black women in Hollywood and is poised to do something about it. After reading December’s issue of Essence with Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle Union and Nia Long, Tyra said “It really upset me to read about how the money they make doesn’t match up.” In fact, after reading that article, she phoned her mother at 5:30 in the morning and announced, “Ma, I have a new calling.” So now Tyra, who is the Executive Producer of not one but two television shows and who recently inked a multi-year development deal with Warner Bros. Entertainment, may actually be in a position to turn things around for Black women in Hollywood- and is making plans as we speak to do just that.
