Singer Janet Jackson, who was last seen looking rather robust while on vacation in Miami, was recently spotted sneaking in through the back door of a party thrown by Scott Storch in honor of Garcelle Beauvais‘ Playboy pictorial. In these most recent pics of Janet, who is partially shielded by her bodyguard, you can see her arms and back and they clearly do not look porkish to me. I personally never believed Janet gained weight and felt the photos posted online were bad camera angles mixed with bulky clothing.

In a press release sent out yesterday, Steven Aaron, who was recently named CEO of Vibe Media Group, said the magazine would cease production with the August/September issue which features Rihanna on the cover. Vixen was a magazine I only became hipped to recently and I subscribed to it for the sole purpose of scanning the articles and pictures for this site. I will miss Vixen slightly, mainly because it gave sistas who weren’t Essence material a place to be seen an heard. Now that Vixen has folded what other magazine made for sistas will feature artists like Keyshia Cole and Mya on the cover? It is times like this that I truly miss Honey Magazine.

Nope, we are not talking about skin acne but rather skin color. Kelly tells Essence magazine that while growing up she was very self conscious about her skin color until Tina Knowles, Beyonce’s Mama, told her how beautiful she was. Kelly laments the problems of being a brown sista and the theory that too dark women cannot sell magazines or music. I agree that there has always been a rule for magazines not to put brown women on their covers for fear they wouldn’t sell, but that wasn’t the case with music, until recently. Remember the 80’s produced Janet Jackson, Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills and Whitney Houston.

… and is sure to set tongues a wagging with what she had to say about Eddie Murphy’s lifestyle. Speaking for the first time to an American publication, Malanie Brown, aka Scary Spice, gives Essence magazine the scoop on her relationship with Eddie and why she truly believes he so unexpectedly called their relationship off. Melanie tells Essence writer Kenya Byrd that upon agreeing to buy a home together she discovered Eddie led a lifestyle that wasn’t fit for children. Though not going into much detail, she claims having strange people knocking on her door at three and four in the morning was not something she wanted to bring her children into.

Some months ago when the Essence article featuring Kim Porter and Sean Diddy Combs hit the stands, I wanted to tackle the reasons why I thought this man refused to commit to Kim and the family they were raising. Because I had not fully made up my mind, I put the subject aside and went about business as usual. However, seeing as though the Kim Diddy union has officially come to an end, yet again, I think now would be a perfect time to delve into why women like Kim end up mothers (I hate the term babymama) before they end up wives. For me this issue goes far beyond Kim and Diddy as Kim is just one of many sistas who have children but no husband to go along with those children.

It was a busy weekend for sistas as Rihanna, Alicia Keys, and Solange Knowles all attended big events. Solange celebrated her b’day down in New Orleans with big sis Beyonce by her side. While Rihanna and Alicia Keys participated in a much more selfless event, Live Earth. It seems Garcelle Beauvais is following in the footsteps of another Black actress, Stacey Dash, and is taking it all off for the pages Playboy Magazine. According to Playboy’s Cyber Club, Garcelle has posed for the August issue of the men’s magazine which hits news stands at the beginning of July. Garcelle is probably best known for her role as Fancy on the Jamie Foxx Show. The sista however started her career off as a model and I believe she has been on the cover of Essence magazine more times than any other model. Garcelle ruled the pages of many Black fashion magazines before she set her sights on Hollywood in the late eighties.
