Here it Is: My Long-Awaited ‘Star’ Review
In preparing to write my review for the pilot episode of the Empire spin-off Star, I kept trying to find another story of a girl group I could compare it to. There is of course Dreamgirls and Sparkle, but I found Star didn’t quite remind me of either. Yes, there are similarities, but it’s obvious creator Lee Daniels aims to think outside the box for his telling of three female singers who leave home in search of the bigtime.
Empire, Fox’s breakout hit of the 2014-15 season, is set to return this fall on September 23 and the network has already got a preview for fans despite the show having only begun taping the new season earlier this month.
The 30-second clip doesn’t feature much but does give a few clues as to what fans can expect in the upcoming season.
We see Cookie visiting Lucious in jail, as well as the Lyon brothers performing at a benefit concert to free their father.
Promo Shots: Keke Palmer for “Scream Queens”
Fox has unveiled the new character posters for their upcoming fall horror fest Scream Queens, which co-stars former True Jackson, VP star Keke Palmer.
The show is set to premiere with a two hour special this fall on September 22, and centers around a creepy sorority house and a string of unsolved murders.
Keke plays Zayday Bubblegum, who describes her character as a cross between Michelle Obama and Beyonce.
While enjoying my advanced preview of several Fox shows (which won’t be available to the public until they air in the fall) I discovered that actress Gabrielle Dennis, best known for her role as Janay on The Game, has landed a co-starring role in the new drama Rosewood, which stars The Perfect Guy actor Morris Chestnut.
Gabrielle plays Pippy, sister, and personal assistant to her brother, Beaumont Rosewood Jr., a private pathologist who uses wildly sophisticated technology to help Miami PD solve crimes no one else can.
Fox has just unveiled the official poster for their upcoming sci-fi drama Minority Report, and unlike the trailer that was previewed at last month’s UpFronts, features actress Meagan Good front and center.
For those of you who need a quick refresher, Meagan and actor Stark Sands are co-leads, though Fox’s first trailer for the show did not make that very apparent. The day after the first trailer was released, a second was unveiled, which then showed a bit more of Meagan’s character.
Empire stars Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard are covering the latest issue of Emmy magazine. Just as they did last year with Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison from Sleepy Hollow, Fox has submitted the pair for consideration in this year’s Emmy race for Best Male and Female lead in a drama series.
Emmy consideration is nothing new to Taraji who scored a nod for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie back in 2011 for her Lifetime film Taken from Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story. Howard on the other hand says an Emmy nod for anyone affiliated with the show, or the show in general, would be “Icing on the cake of an already amazing television experience.”
