Top 4 Best Dressed at The GRAMMYs…and More

Last night definitely had it’s series of unfortunate events (never thought I’d ever say that!), in Hollywood-Land. First ‘Swagger Like Us’ singer M.I.A. was set to perform, despite her pregnancy due date being on the same night. Then, we hear of Usher’s decision to skip the award show, because of his wife’s plastic surgery mishap in Brazil. But, the worst of all was when we found out Rihanna, fashionista extraordinaire, was skipping out also. So, since she decided to not to show, we’re one brown sista short on this best dressed list — ‘cuz you already know she was was gonna be one of the best!

Mary J. Cancels Grammy Performance

As hard as it is to believe, singer Mary J. Blige, according to BV Newswire, has canceled her Grammy performance, which included a duet with Aretha Franklin, to instead focus on other live performances that will help promote her new single, “Hurt Again”. Mary’s rep confirmed that the singer will instead be performing a slew of other television shows that include Rachel Ray, Jimmy Kimmel Live and two appearances on ABC’s One Life To Live.
And to cap off the month, ‘VH1 Storytellers: Mary J. Blige’ will premiere Feb. 25 a 8 p.m. ET/PT. Taped in front of a live studio audience at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom last month, the hour long show will feature Blige performing songs from ‘Growing Pains’ in addition to past hits. Following in the ‘Storytellers’ format, viewers will get a unique opportunity to hear the inspiration and stories behind each song. No word on a tour yet, but something tells me that she – as one of the most engaging live performers of her generation – will have something jumping off in the very near future.

Alicia Keys Makes A Statement

Alicia Keys The New York Chapter of The Recording Academy (Those people who pass out the Grammys) paid tribute to singer Alicia Keys, Bon Jovi, Donnie McClurkin and the Creators of West Side Story, last night at a dinner held at Cipriani’s. Alicia, who has never been known for her sense of fashion, showed up in an outfit that definitely made a statement. I loved the gloves and I can even stomach those gawd awful high waisted pants that have become so popular. However, I have to draw the line when it comes to those shoes. Somehow, once you combine those shoes with the white shirt, black pants and black and white gloves- you get the look of a mime- and I know that isn’t the look Alicia and her stylist were going for.

Beyonce: I Wish I Was Born Latina

Leave it to Beyonce to cause controversy- even in Spanish. Latina Magazine recently interviewed the sista about her Spanish language album and in the interview Beyonce stated how grateful she was for the support of her Latin fans. Beyonce then went on to make this statement: “I’m just jealous that I wasn’t born Latina. I wish I had been because the culture is so beautiful. ” It is my personal opinion that Beyonce was probably just doing an extra bit of butt kissing. However, as a Black woman she should have known better. Such a statement looks bad and wreaks of self hatred. Plus, I doubt a Latin star would have made such a statement concerning Black people simply because they have crossover appeal among us.
