Brown Sistas from across the Hollywood spectrum turned out in force tonight for the start of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute Gala. This year’s event is being held to celebrate the museum’s latest exhibition: Sperheroes: Fashion and Fantasy.Singers
Janet Jackson,
Beyonce and
Mary J. Blige walked the red carpet alongside actresses like
Thandie Newton and Paula Patton and all looked fabulous.

Fashion Week officially kicked off Monday and since then there have been dozens of fashion and fashion related events attended by Brown Sistas. Sudanese model Alek Wek debuted her book, Alek: From Sudanese Refugee To International Supermodel at a glitzy party at Socialista. Among those in attendence were fellow Afrikan model Iman, designer Diane Von Furstenberg and model-mogul Kimora Lee Simmons. Ciara also showed up for the fashion festivities and was seen taking in the BCBG Max Azaria show along with Ashley Simpson. Actress Joy Bryant attended Glamour Magazine’s “Fashion Gives Back” benefit last night. While rapper Eve was seen at the Van Kleef & Arpels French inspired theme party at the Hammerstein Ballroom. To celebrate the influence of Blacks on the global fashion scene, Ebony will pay tribute to all things Black and beautiful in the September edition of their magazine. Fifty pages will be dedicated to Black fashion designers, models and trend setters who have helped shape the world of fashion as we know it. Tyra and the above ladies will also chronicle how they went from everyday runway models to entrepreneurs running million dollar companies. Look for the issue to hit newsstands August 13th with models Tyra Banks, Alek Wek, Iman and Kimora Lee Simmons on the cover.

At New York City’s trendy Coffee Shop restaurant—where model-esque servers sashay between tables and smartly-attired diners sip midday cocktails—Yaya DaCosta is in control.
“I don’t want to focus too much on the show,” begins the young model/ actress, just minutes after slipping her slight 5′ 8″ frame into a booth and ordering a caipirinha, a drink she fell in love with when she studied abroad in Brazil. “I’m grateful for it,” she continues carefully, “but it’s just that it happened over a year ago and there’s other stuff going on.”
