Back In The Day: Jade “One Woman” Performance

Here is a video I recently found on You Tube of my second favorite girl group of the nineties: Jade. The group consisted of Tonya Kelly, Joi Marshall, and Di Reed. During their brief yet successful career, Jade released two full albums, one exclusive live album, and had a string of popular R&B hits. Here they are above performing their single “One Woman” on BET’s Video Soul back in 1992.

Melanie Brown’s Husband Troubles

Now that Melanie Brown has married Stephen Belafonte, the media’s focus seems to have shifted from Eddie Murphy, to Melanie’s new hubby, who seems to have a very jaded past. According to news reports, Stephen lists his last name on their marriage certificate as Belafonte when in actuality it is Stansbury. There are also reports that he tried to pass himself off as Dionne Warwick’s nephew and Harry Belafonte’s son. The most troubling news however is how many times Stephen has been arrested for violent crimes, all against past girlfriends.

Blast From The Past: Jade

Jade If you have been reading then site for any length of time, then you know that I am a huge fan of r&b music from the early 90’s. Groups like SWV, Brownstone, En Vogue and Jade were all a part of my upbringing and anytime I hear their music I am automatically taken back to a time most of us fondly remember- high school. Back in the early 90’s female r&b groups totally ruled the planet and what a beautiful planet it was. One of my favorite groups was Jade, and just like En Vogue, Jade was an all girl group comprised of nothing but lead singers. Each girl was beautiful and could totally hold her own on the mic. Unfortunately, also like En Vogue, they had a very short run in the music business (less than 10 years) and would eventually be replaced with the likes of 702 and the even yuckier 3LW.

Where Are The Female Rappers?

Salt n' Pepa Eve: The Last Female Rapper. Was I dream-ing? Nope. That’s what the promotional flier said. How could that be? How could rap music, an art form that isn’t even 40 years old yet, end up with only one female MC left? Well to be honest- the producers of these fliers were taking great liberties by calling Eve the last female rapper. She isn’t so much the last as she is the only one that hasn’t released an album lately that flopped. Eve has been MIA from the rap scene for a while now, but if my memory serves me correctly- her last album didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Still, the idea that Eve was the last female MC left got me to wondering where exactly did all the female rappers go?

Blast From The Past: Adina Howard

Adina Howard You have got to be over twenty-five to remember this sista. Adina Howard burst onto the R n’ B scene in the mid nineties as a sexed up version of Janet Jackson. Complete with hot pants and the sexiest group of female back up dancers you have ever scene, Adina dominated the summer on 95′ with hits like My Up And Down and Freak Like Me. Adina’s first album Do You Wanna Ride was a certified hit and has sold 1.3 million copies to date. Unfortunately, like a lot of nineties acts, (En Vogue, Jade, Monifah) Adina’s career was short lived. Her second album, Welcome To Fantasy Island was shelved by her record label after they decided it contained no radio friendly singles. Undeterred, Adina has continued to record music and even collaborated with Jamie Foxx on his first CD.

Janet Jackson’s Interview With Vibe Vixen

Janet Jackson I was trying not to post any information from the upcoming issue of Vibe Vixen that features Janet Jackson on the cover until I at least had the digital copy of the magazine for myself. It seems however that will not be happening so I am finally posting the entire interview here as well as the picture used for the cover shot which you can see to your left.In this interview Janet talks about the usual- Michael’s former nose, her former nose and her obvious love for Jermaine Dupri. She also touches on her relationship with his 9 year old daughter and her own future plans for motherhood. As usual, Janet does not give out too much information thus making this interview as uneventful as the rest she did for the 20 Y.0 album. The only good thing that came from this article was confirmation that Janet would indeed be going on tour later on this year.
