Brown Sista

Singer Janet Jackson was spotted leaving a Miami nightclub on Saturday night and just as I reported last week, the sista is not only slim and trim, but co-ordinated as well. I am totally loving Janet’s style, but what really caught my eye was how her outfit, right down to the shoes and belt, match her Sidekick. Janet has been making the rounds to quite a few nightclubs these days, something she is known to do in order to scout new dancers and keep her sound and style fresh.

Singer Janet Jackson, who was last seen looking rather robust while on vacation in Miami, was recently spotted sneaking in through the back door of a party thrown by Scott Storch in honor of Garcelle Beauvais‘ Playboy pictorial. In these most recent pics of Janet, who is partially shielded by her bodyguard, you can see her arms and back and they clearly do not look porkish to me. I personally never believed Janet gained weight and felt the photos posted online were bad camera angles mixed with bulky clothing.

Nope, we are not talking about skin acne but rather skin color. Kelly tells Essence magazine that while growing up she was very self conscious about her skin color until Tina Knowles, Beyonce’s Mama, told her how beautiful she was. Kelly laments the problems of being a brown sista and the theory that too dark women cannot sell magazines or music. I agree that there has always been a rule for magazines not to put brown women on their covers for fear they wouldn’t sell, but that wasn’t the case with music, until recently. Remember the 80’s produced Janet Jackson, Anita Baker, Stephanie Mills and Whitney Houston.

As many of you know, Alicia Keys is in the studio working on her new album and unlike the other r n’ b divas out at the moment, Alicia is not going into the studio with Polow da Don or Timbaland, but rather indie rock star, John Mayer. Now, I’ll be honest and tell you that John isn’t exactly making music that lights up my life, but the fact that in an effort to make original music, Alicia would choose to collaborate with an artist that exudes substance over style, really impresses me.

Today’s random celebrity sightings post consists of some of my favorite brown sistas. From Janet Jackson to Melyssa Ford, we have Black Women from all walks of Hollywood life covered. First up however is Keyshia Cole who held her album release party last night. Keyshia is sporting a new shorter do that I really like and it reminds me quite a bit of Rihanna’s new shorter style. Hopefully both these ladies will usher in a less in more look for celebrity sistas when it come to their hair.

Singer Ciara co-hosted Polow da Don’s record label launch party and she was just about the only high profile celebrity who came out to support the man who calls himself King Of The White Girls. Buzz circulating had Janet Jackson attending- as da Don is rumored to be producing tracks for her upcoming album. Janet however was a no show, as were all those White girls Polow likes to brag about giving the Black sound to. As expected, Black women did show up to support this silly Negro as Ciara was joined by T-Boz and up and comer Keri Wilson.

Recording artist that is. Rumors had been swirling for months that Janet would leave Virgin Records and follow her beau, Jermaine Dupri, to Island Def Jam where is the VP or the urban division. News of Janet’s departure from her long time record label came as no surprise to her fans but few, if any, think Def Jam is the best place for her to be. I personally am just a bit disappointed because this means Jermaine will have even more control over Janet’s music and quite honestly, I just don’t think he is the best producer for her to work with. But you can’t tell a woman in love anything and thus Janet will have to learn the hard way that you shouldn’t always mix business with pleasure.
