New mommy Kelis has won Round 1 in her court battle with soon to be ex-husband, rapper Nas. Earlier today, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge, Louis Meisinger, awarded the singer $39,498 per month in child support; an amount that is substantially more than the $20,000 she was originally seeking and a helluva lot more than the one time payment of $20,000 Nas’ lawyer had originally proposed. To add insult to injury, the Judge also ordered Nas to fork over another $45,000 to pay for Kelis’ attorney fees.
As many of you know, the singer went into labor earlier this week and delivered a healthy baby boy, named Knight Jones, on Wednesday evening. As for todays events, Kelis’ rep would only say: “Kelis is grateful to have given birth to a healthy baby boy and her focus is on getting acquainted with him and enjoying her role as a new mom.”
I’m sure you have heard about the recent splitting of Kelis and Nas. Although this saddens me to see another Black couple ending their life together, another important issue has come to my attention through this. Apparently, Kelis wants Nas to take care of their unborn child and HER for the rest of her life. I can understand her wanting him to care for their child but it gets deeper than that and that is when I grow concerned. See the following statement:
TMZ reports, Kelis is asking the judge to order Nas to pay spousal support, child support, all pregnancy-related expenses, and one-half of all medical expenses after the child is born. She also wants $3,500 for the baby nurse after the child’s birth, and $20,000 for strollers, cribs and other baby supplies. Kelis says she’s entitled to maintain the lifestyle to which she became accustomed during their marriage — they have five homes, fly first class, go to fancy restaurants, and on and on. Most interesting — “There were many expensive pieces [of jewelry] such as a princess-cut diamond tennis bracelet that was recently appraised for $190,000. My engagement ring is an approximately nine-carat cushion-cut diamond solitaire. I have numerous watches…such as Cartier, Rolex, Frank Muller and Chopard“My survival is based on [Nas’] will at this time. If he does not want to pay for an expense, it does not get paid.” Continue Reading
Rumors of Kelis and Nas splitting up are probably untrue seeing as how the couple were spotted earlier this week leaving Club Villa together. Online reports had the two on the outs because their MTV reality show had been canned and Nas had apparently been seen without his wedding ring. Why is being seen sans a wedding ring always used as a sign that a couple is having problems? How many married people wear their rings everyday and at all times? Besides, Nas ain’t about to leave Kelis. According to him the sista is a traditional wife who can put it down in the kitchen. Trust me when I tell you- men don’t leave women who can cook- lol.
