Brown Sistas At The 2008 BET Hip Hop Awards

The 2008 BET Hip Hop Awards ceremony was held earlier this evening at the Boisfeuillet Jones Civic Center in Atlanta, Georgia. And as expected, the event was a testosterone filled extravaganza that only came to a crescendo when the fellas stepped aside and the ladies of hip hop were allowed to take over. Providing the night’s most unforgettable moment, MC Lyte, Salt n’ Pepa with Spinderalla, as well as Yo-Yo and Lady of Rage, took to the stage and rattled off a medley of their hits, including Cha Cha Cha, You Can’t Play With My Yo-Yo, My Mic Sounds Nice, and Push It.

Salt n’ Pepa Plan Muiscal Biopic

80s rap icon Sandy “Pepa” Denton recently revealed that she, Salt and Spinderealla were working on bringing their life story to the big screen. As many of you know, Salt n’ Pepa were the first female rappers to garner mainstream success with such hits as Shoop and Whatta Man. However, after finally striking it big in the early 2000s, the group disbanded, and only recently united via their VH1 reality series The Salt n’ Pepa Show. “It’s a story that needs to be told,” Pepa told WENN. “It’s that girl-next-door story- people would identify with it. It would make a great movie - very juicy.” Pepa revealed she would like Meagan Good to portray her in the film. “Meagan Good could play me in my younger years. She reminds me of myself,” said Pepa. Earlier this year, Pepa released her memoir titled Let’s Talk About Pep. The book chronicles Pepa’s rap career and revealed the abuse she suffered in her childhood and failed marriages. She also speaks on her “breakup” with Salt and their eventual “reunion”.

Salt n’ Pepa Cover Jet Magazine

Salt n' Pepa 80’s rap duo, Salt “Chery James” and Pepa “Sandy Denton”, are featured on the upcoming March 24th edition of Jet Magazine. Both of the ladies look really beautiful and I don’t really know why but when I first saw this pic of these two sistas I almost got emotional. Salt n’ Pepa were to my generation what I can imagine Diana Ross and The Supremes were to my mother’s generation- and so to still see them on the scene today, in some capacity, feels really good. As a GAW (Grown Ass Woman) there are few women on the music scene today I can identify with and so these sistas really remind me of a great time in music that is long gone. Sistas dominated the music scene in the late 80s and 90’s and ladies like Janet, Whitney, Stephanie Mills, Toni Braxton, En Vogue and Jade made music that was not only enjoyable, but they projected an image of Black women that most of us could identify with, or at least aspire to be.
