Taraji P. Henson to Appear on ‘The Simpsons’
Actress Taraji P. Henson is set to lend her voice to an upcoming episode of The Simpsons. The one hour special titled The Great Phatsby, will revolve around Mr. Burns as he tries to relive his glory days as a performer. Taraji will voice the character of Praline, the ex-wife of a bigtime music mogul who once double-crossed Burns.
While I’m not completely sold on Empire just yet, I admit the show has become something of a guilty pleasure I partake in when bored. Such was the case earlier this evening when I watched a preview of next week’s episode titled Poor Yorick.
I’ve complied a short list of moments that stood out for me, but be warned, they are spoiler heavy. If you’re okay with that, then proceed without caution, because I think you’re gonna like what you see.
Empire Ratings Slip, Fox Unbothered
Though it was still the king of Wednesday night, Empire has suffered its first ratings slip, both in demo and overall viewership.
While the show’s sophomore premiere drew over sixteen million viewers and garnered a whopping 6.7 demo, last night’s episode slid by three million viewers and secured a 5.4 demo. Nothing to sneeze at by any means, but noteworthy because the show’s demo and viewers have risen steadily with almost every episode.
Renewed: Fox Greenlights a Third Season of Empire
While I was not a fan of Empire’s season two premiere The Devils are Here, it appears many of you were. Via press release, Fox announced the episode’s stellar ratings, which topped the 16-million mark, and secured a mind-boggling 6.7 in the advertiser coveted 18-49 age group.
Fox was of course pleased with those numbers, and have quietly (for now) renewed the show for a third season. The network launched a brilliant Twitter campaign which resulted in over two million tweets being sent out before the show even aired. Nielsen attributes much of Empire’s continued growth to its powerful presence on social media, particularly Twitter where the show has a very active following.
Though obviously not nominated, Apple Music was by far one of the biggest winners at last night’s 67th Annual Emmy Awards.
The world’s largest music purveyors weren’t on hand, but still managed to steal a good portion of the show’s glory with a commercial that featured two nominees and the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.
Empire, Fox’s break-out hit of the 2014-2015 television season, is a show I continue to be on the fence about. While I understand the show’s success, I can’t help but cringe at the way it chooses to shed light on certain social issues. For example: the mass incarceration of black men in this country.
The issue is touched on quite a bit in the beginning of The Devils Are Here, season two’s first episode, which I just watched a preview of. The show kicks off with a Free Lucious Concert, and features rapper Swizz Beatz lamenting what he believes to be the unjust jailing of Lucious, who we all know is actually very much guilty of what he has been jailed for.
Glamour magazine has released three different covers for the month of October. One features Empire actress Taraji P. Henson; while the other two feature Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez and Scream Queens actress Emma Roberts.
Empire returns for its sophomore season on September 23, and according to Taraji, her character will have undergone some major changes. “Cookie is no longer a fish out of water this season. She’s got a business to run and you’ll see her take change and really command the respect of those around her.”
Fox Unveils Season Two Empire Cast Photo
Empire’s season two cast photo is here. Fox released the image earlier today, as well as a 22-minute promo-reel of what fans can expect when the show returns on September 23.
Fox had previously unveiled individual cast photos for season two, as well as a stunning poster of Lucious (Terence Howard) and Cookie (Taraji P. Henson). Today’s poster, however, features the entire cast, including Ta’Shonda Jones (Porsha) who who was recently bumped up to series regular.
