Tyra Banks Covers EW Magazine

Tyra Banks is gracing the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly and the magazine has graciously crowned her “America’s Next Top Mogul”. Yeah, I know that’s corny- but with two hit television shows and another possibly on the way- EW may be on to something. Tyra’s latest venture, A “Devil Wears Prada” type reality show, gives assistants a chance to possibly run a fashion magazine on their own. In each episode, the contestants will take on individual and a team challenges- which will involve creating a page for a mockup of the proposed magazine. The losing team’s page will be dumped, and one member will be eliminated with the winning team’s page included in “The Book.” The winner of the show will land a job in the fashion industry and possibly become assistant editors at a “real” fashion magazine.

With all the Superbowl hoopla going on I almost forgot that Fashion Week in New York City’s Bryany Park was in full swing. Tyra Banks Covers Essence Magazine

I’ll admit it- I haven’t really paid much attention to Tyra Banks in years and don’t really watch either of her television shows. Still, Tyra is Brown Sista Icon and so when she does something noteworthy I am more than happy to showcase it here. Such is the case with Tyra covering the February 2008 edition of Essence Magazine. And it is not so much Tyra landing the cover, something she done twice previously, but rather what she talks about in her interview with Jeannine Turner. It seems Tyra is none to happy with the opportunities for Black women in Hollywood and is poised to do something about it. After reading December’s issue of Essence with Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle Union and Nia Long, Tyra said “It really upset me to read about how the money they make doesn’t match up.” In fact, after reading that article, she phoned her mother at 5:30 in the morning and announced, “Ma, I have a new calling.” So now Tyra, who is the Executive Producer of not one but two television shows and who recently inked a multi-year development deal with Warner Bros. Entertainment, may actually be in a position to turn things around for Black women in Hollywood- and is making plans as we speak to do just that.
