Tameka Foster: Essence Interview

Part 2

Tameka Foster takes on the Queen of All Media.

Radio Talk: “Wendy Williams is obsessed with me.”

Essence.com: You aren’t just talked about in cyberspace; you’re being shouted out on the airwaves as well, especially by shock jock Wendy Williams.

Tameka Foster: Wendy Williams is obsessed with me. I think that is so sexy to have someone talk about me every day, especially when I don’t have a CD, demo or TV pilot. I’m just a stylist and designer and if I can be mentioned in the same breath as Diddy, then I must be doing something right. I think she loves me more than she lets on. I need to make her a part of my marketing team.

Essence.com: Has she ever met you?

T.F.: Yes, I appeared on her show a couple of years ago after meeting her at a fashion party for Rocawear at the Hotel Gansevoort in Manhattan. She invited me to come on her show and talk about my clients. I knew she’d ask me some personal things. When I showed up she jumped right into asking me questions about Usher and his mom and whether or not he is rude to her and if they get along. I didn’t go there for that… So her version is that I was drunk and I came to her show to air dirty laundry on Usher. But the truth is she was mad because I wouldn’t dish on anybody.

Tameka Foster talks about her fantasy wedding and walking down the aisle as Mrs. Usher Raymond.

Love Jones: “I have a good man in every sense of the word.”

Essence.com: When did you know that Usher was The One?

Tameka Foster: I knew he was the man for me when I told him personal things about me and he didn’t flinch. I never felt like he judged me. Instead, he just accepted me for who I am. I am 36 with three children so I don’t have the body of a 21-year-old. I have flaws, I have an attitude problem, I never make flights and the list goes on. Overall, I have issues that a person could either love or hate, but he accepted me completely. And every day he still treats me like we just met. He opens my car door, calls me to ask if I need anything. He gives a 100 percent and doesn’t waver on consistency.

Essence.com: Aww, Black love. So why do you think people still believe your relationship is a publicity stunt?

T.F.: That’s so foolish. Usher doesn’t have to date any woman to sell albums. He has one of the best voices and can outperform almost anyone. He naturally garners attention wherever he goes. The fact is he has many options and could have chosen to be with anyone, including a Hollywood actress that the press would have loved to write about daily.

Essence.com: I hear you have a 10 carat ring.

T.F.: Actually, it’s bigger. It’s 11.5 carats Asscher cut. A man is not going to go out and buy 11-plus carats to be playing games. If that were the case, he could have just said he was engaged rather than go through the motions.

Essence.com: Whoa! I guess Plymouth Rock didn’t land on us, it landed on your hand!

T.F.: [Laughs] Yeah, it’s pretty serious. I don’t wear it everywhere. It’s just a great reminder of our promise, but I would be happy to be engaged with nothing because he’s a bigger jewel than any ring.

Essence.com: I’m sure his proposal was equally as fabulous!

T.F.: It’s a long story, but it was a beautiful proposal. We were in a studio with a mutual friend of ours, Robin Thicke, who serenaded me while he played the piano. He was playing the piano and singing “The Stupid Things” from his first album.

Essence.com: Did you have any idea Usher would get down on bended knee?

T.F.: No, I was shocked! He made a statement and Robin began singing the song and it was just beautiful. You know, I have a very good man, in every sense of the word and not because of his celebrity, but because he treats me like a woman.

Essence.com: When is the wedding?

T.F.: I’d like to get married sooner, but I’m engaged to a really busy guy. He has a lot of things on his plate. He owns sports teams, restaurants and has an album coming out at the end of this year that he has to promote. I just want to make sure he has time to be at his own wedding. I haven’t set a date, time, place or decided how many guests we’ll have. I’m not worried about what I’m going to wear because that’s the furthest thing from my mind. I might even hire a stylist to help me shop. But it’s all okay because it’s like we’re already married. We are happy with each other and clear about where we are.

Essence.com: Would you elope?

T.F.: Mmmm. I’ve considered that as well with all the press, but I doubt it. I think our close friends would be offended if we did.

Essence.com: What do you say to those who question the sincerity of your relationship?

T.F.: Tell them to keep watching. Usher has done a major coming-of-age. So if he’s doing anything that doesn’t fit the cookie-cutter image people expect from him, then they have something negative to say. If I’m not the right person for him, let time tell. I don’t know that we’ll be together until we die, but we’re happy now and we ain’t bothering nobody.

  1. Good that she cleared all that up. We can’t judge by what we see and hear, cause we don’t know a damn thing. As for her and Usher’s mother, I believe her, cause believe it or not, the media loves to put women against each other and are quick to label them “crazy”, “manipulative” and “competitive”, only because it’s more believable (when all those behaviors don’t even depend on gender) and makes a good story to sell. We had no evidence of all those accusations. As for her kids, I ALWAYS thought she wanted to protect them from the public.

And I’m tired of folks saying that she’s not pretty enough for Usher, first off, she’s the “good looking one” in the relationship. Second, looks aren’t everything. You can’t spend your time getting caught up in somebody’s outter beauty cause IT FADES! If they’re gorgeous, good, if they’re not, so what? As long as they’re beautiful inside. I just hope it works out for them and that Usher really matured as a man.

  2. Thank you Chante. Tameka definitely put fools in their place. People have totally created their own little image of this woman based on what the gossip blogs say. I am at least glad Brown Sista hasn’t followed suit, and I agree that Tameka is a very pretty woman. She may not always take the best photos but that is normal. The camera loves some more than others but she is still pretty and does look a bit like Chilli. They both have that mixed Indian look going with the smooth black hair.

  3. Tameka is having to answer her Black female critics. You women complain when brothers take up with other women but when brothers get a real Black woman other Black women are some of the first to call her ugly and a gold digger. I have seen you all do it with Dwayne Wade’s wife and a whole lot others. You women are busy hating because she has a man you all want but can’t get. Females silliness at it’s finest.

  4. Tameka showed poor judgment by even responding to the foolishness posted on gossip blogs. It’s crazy the power these site have now. As long as Tameka’s man is happy she should be happy. I would hardly let what the public’s opinion of me affect my relationship. I would be too busy basking in the warm arms of my man to care what a bunch of online losers thought.

  5. It ain’t just women talking ish, men called Tameka an ugly manly looking h** who cheated on her husband and a bad mother too. I’ve heard and seen on blogs men talk ish on Kanye’s current woman while making fun of Eddie Murphy’s ex-wife. Calling ANY woman getting with a rich man a golddigger. It’s no secret that men talk ish too and are on blogs as much as women, I mean Brian from Concreteloop, a male, even co-runs the site.

  6. Rodney Jerkins latin wife dated Derek Jeter and that Rodrigues player, the really cute one before she married him. Rodney is a fat arse dark skin Black man. You can’t tell me after dating two men like Jeter and Rodriguez she really liked Rodney. She is a singer and he was a hot producer. She married him for money and tracks and I ain’t never heard her or any of the other White and non Black women who marry Black men referred to as gold diggers.

Oftentimes Black women have their own goals and aspirations and are doing their own thing. Look at Puffy’s girlfriend and Big Boi’s wife and Snoop’s wife. These Black women own their businesses and are blazing their own trail. They ain’t just picking up a paycheck.

Tameka had ends before she met Usher so why the gold digger label? I swear folks kill me with that ish 😡

  7. Mad props to Usher for dating a ‘regular’ black girl. It just goes to show black sugar is just as SWEET. he could have chosen some light skinned arm candy, because he can get any woman he wants. He is dating inside his race because he finds black woman just as beautiful. Tameka is a round the way girl who people hate because she is dating one of the hottest guys in the game. Usher is number one in my book. If he was dating a white girl would everyone be riding his butt?

  8. Of course we all are glad she repsonded and let us in a little but some things just don’t add up. I don’t think she’s a gold digger or nothing, but I do think the both of them came in between relationships. It’s just funny how both of them had each other to rebound on. In all it’s cool, there happy and that’s all that matters…… 🙂

  9. I agree with RAWLO AND DAWN!

We get mad at brothas who only want biracial or light skinned trophy chicks on their arm, then when we see a black man with a real natural looking brown sista every one dogs her out…I personally don’t see anything wrong with Tamekia or they way she looks…Her Essence pictures look cute…And what makes her a gold digger? She has always been a business woman who was married to one man who fathered all of her children..Anytime a normal person marries a rich person they will be seen as a gold digger.

Looking at all of these of these dumb color struck negros and athletes, I’m proud to see Usher with a brown sista…Unlike every one else maybe he’s marrying for love and not looks

  10. Black people will not be happy until they have totally destroyed themselves. I predict that all this bad press surrounding Usher and his woman will result in bad sales for Usher’s new album. As it is, while Usher was away, Justin Timberlake has come up and in him white folks see all they need. A white boy with Black style and sound. This alone will cause the mass media to ignore Usher when he comes back because they don’t want any competition for Justin. Black folks are foolishly helping this along and don’t even know it. We often help in the demise of our Black stars and then we claim they were wack or washed up.

Tameka Foster is just a woman engaged to Usher. Why do Blacks hate her so much? What has she ever done to any of you or to Usher or anyone else that you all know of that makes you detest her so much? Usher wants and loves her and that is all that matters. Those two people have decided to love and cherish each other and at no time should we try to destroy that simply because our lives are so dull and boring.

But it is the women who started the hate and keep it going. Even you all don’t like her because you think Usher could have done better if he had a pretty lighter woman. Black women judge other Black women on their looks and even to you all you think the whiter they look the prettier they are. You women don’t really love yourselves and you are behind the insecure feeling so many sisters have about their looks.

  12. Quote, you have truly said the smartest thing I have heard about this subject in a long time.

We did this same stuff to Hammer, Janet and countless other black celebs that slide by the wayside. We are so self destructive. That is why I would prefer artist like Rhianna or media diva Oprah continue to cater to a pop/white market because black people do not respect or love you no matter how great you are or what you try to do to please them and help others.

  13. This woman just can’t win. She might as well just ignore the haters and go on with her life.
