The 7 Sistas of Summer

Meagan Good When it comes to films in general, there are never enough roles for women on the screen, let enough leading roles, or roles for African American women, but so far this year, we have seen a good share of prominent roles go to Black women. While Halle Berry is the only one to have a leading role in “Perfect Stranger”, some supporting roles were given with Meagan Good in “Stomp The Yard”, Thandie Newton in “Norbit”, Gabrielle Union in “Daddy’s Little Girls”, S. Epatha Merkerson in “Black Snake Moan”, Kimberly Elise in “Pride”, Jada Pinkett Smith in “Reign Over Me”, Nia Long in “Are We Done Yet?”, Tracie Thoms and Sydney Tamaii Poitier in “Grindhouse”, Vivica A. Fox in “The Salon”, and Victoria Rowell in “Home of the Brave”.

As the summer gets going and the studio as well as the audience focusing heavily on potential blockbusters such as Spider-man 3, Shrek The Third, Ocean’s Thirteen, and Transformers, here’s a look at some of the African American women that will seen in some of these summer films as compiled by BlackFilm.com

  1. Nice piece. Black Film is one of my favorite websites. They were the first to post all those great clips from Dreamgirls. I enjoed Daddys Little Girls but few movies interest me as most are silly and made for kids.I mostly look forward now to the new stuff coming from Tyler Perry.

  2. I loved Wanda Sykes in Monster and Law and I just caught her comedy special on HBO last month. I had no idea she was so funny. Everytime she called Jane Fonda’s character and old s-lut I nearly fell out

  3. I love Naomie Harris. She is part of the reason I thought Pirates of the Caribbean 2 was so good! Tea Dalma was the shiznit! Blackened teeth and all. 😆 So glad they reprised her role.

  4. JBL, I saw Wanda’s HBO special last month at my in-laws house and she had me, my husband and BOTH of his parents rolling on the floor laughing! :lol2: She is the funniest black woman in comedy period!

Kerry, Kerry, Kerry – you all know how much I adore this woman on the big screen.

I am still waiting for the world to wake up and recognize Taraji Henson’s acting skills! Seriously, in Hustle & Flow, Terrence wasn’t the only one who made that movie so good.
