Trailer: Viola Davis’ New ABC Drama

VIOLA DAVIS - ABC (140x140)

Viola Davis’ new ABC drama “How to Get Away with Murder” will officially join the network’s Thursday night line-up when it debuts later this fall.

The Shonda Rhimes produced legal drama will air at 10pm, while “Grey’s Anotomy” has been moved up to 8pm and “Scandal” to 9pm.

The resulting line-up has produced for the first time in network history, a block of programming all from the same creator. ABC is apparently betting Shonda, who reportedly just signed an eight figure deal with the network, can help dig them out of their overall third place finish among the top four networks last season.

Word has it ABC is also betting on black women (sound familiar) and multi-ethnic casts to boost ratings. Apparently taking notes from shows like Sleepy Hollow and Elementary, the powers that be are looking to tap into a market they had previously chosen to underserve.

Nevertheless, I plan to support Viola’s first gig as a network lead, and hope to see more sistas taking the lead in future shows.

  1. OMG!!!

This is going to be a major hit! Unless, the writing and directing sucks (mario peebles, please), because we know Viola can deliver! Law school enrollments will soar, even though, we have plenty already. Shondra is my super hero for real, she has her finger on the pulse of pop culture, politics and industry, this show seems like gossip girl, damages, boston legal, legally blonde (the dark version), scandal and pieces from feature films with courtroom twists and turns, CAN’T WAIT!

  2. I love me some Shonda and girlfriend is making sure to leave no stone unturned….for that, she has my utmost respect. She’s managed to deliver a product that is not only entertaining, but maintain a level of integrity that many other shows, creators, and producers haven’t been able to deliver. Despite the controversy surrounding Olivia Pope and her being the mistress to the president, I think that Shonda does a great job of keeping it interesting.

Now all of that being said, after this next season of Grey’s, I think Shonda should wrap it up and let the memories stay with us. I love Grey’s, but it’s time to have the final curtain call on this one…

I’ll be tuned in for new show…Viola is amazing! :):)

  3. Viola is on FIRE in that trailer! I am so ready to see this show! I love Viola as an actress, she is exceptional in all of her roles. Plus, the fact that this is a Shonda Rhimes production, makes this must see t.v. I am so proud of this sista, being a producer, writer and executive. While giving other black people, particularly women, prime roles. An added bonus is that this show is coming on after Scandal, which makes it oh so convenient to watch.

  4. I can’t wait to check out the new show looks awesome.

  5. Like Spongebob Squarepants chants, “I’m ready! I’m ready! I’m ready!”

Kudos to Shonda for bringing the stories to ABC. I tell you it is at times for me as a film lover mind-blowing to see great television overtake my love for viewing films on the regular. Give me a great series and I’m hooked and in there and all weekend long, watching it from the premiere episode until completion. I love seeing the movie actors go to television. It is boon for both the networks as well as the actors because with television/cable you can get away with so much more (and for longer) than one hour and forty-five minutes of film time.

You mentioned Elementary. *throws hand in air, waves handkerchief* I’m so amazed at the toss-up in casting for those beloved characters. I love that show!

I will say that I hope Shonda gets it together with Scandal for the new season.
