Trina Celebrates Black History Month

Yes, I am dead serious. Ordinarily I would never post something like this, but even I laughed when I saw this cover with Trina on it. The Miami rapper graces the February cover of Smooth Magazine, which just so happens to also be their “Black History” issue. Now I know this is Smooth- a men’s magazine, but couldn’t they have done better than this? Yes Trina is beautiful, but since this is their “Black History” issue, couldn’t they have say, put Barack Obama on the cover? I mean he is featured inside the magazine anyway- so why not get brothas minds off the booty and put it on the ballot instead. Black men now more than ever need to be politically savvy and believe it or not, magazines like Smooth and KING can help bring political awareness to brothas who may ordinarily not pay attention to such things. Booty and bling. Booty and bling. It seems that is all the owners of magazines aimed at Black men want them to think about. I wonder why that is?

They could have taken a flattering photo of Michelle Obama, or even a better photo of Trina since this is the Black History issue..Booty and Bling does turn heads the quickest, but we “Gots ta do better” :hmph:

:iagree: Let me start by saying yes I love you black sistas. One of the most beautiful things about you are your curvious bodies. However you hit the nail on the head. Now a quick comment or two about Trina. How tasteless!! First of all with God as my witness I`ve never been attracted to her in a sexual manner, despite her rear-end, honestly. She doesn`t do anything for me. Ms. A. Keys is my girl. Alicia is far more classy and to me a helluva lot more beautiful and sexy. Also Alicia doesn`t have to degrade herself to nothing more than a booty to get noticed. When you listen to the two women talk it`s clear as to who has it all together on the intellect side. Believe me when I tell you I`ll take Alicia anyday and I happen to think she`s the finer one of the two.

You`re also correct in your assessment that we,men, need to get our minds off the booty and more on the ballot. We do need to become more political savvy. If we were to spend time on the political process as we do on the booty and the bling we would make a huge step in becoming a major player in the political arena as a whole. I,myself, did my part yesterday by casting my ballot for Obama who won my state(GA) by a 2 to 1 margin, go Obama!!

P.S. One final not on Trina.
Yeah she hasn`t had a hit since I don`t know when. So how does she get a cover?!?!? She`s clearly not a lady, just someone who degrades herself to nothing more than a “BOOTY”. How tasteless Trina. Get some damn respect!!!!!!!

i don’t think it would have been appropriate to put senator obama on the cover of smooth. you don’t see other presidential candidates on the cover of plaboy although they are featured in the magazine. as far as michelle on the cover no man would want his wife on the cover of smooth except ice t.

Not this again, other site was complaining about her. Mainly women which brings me to the question. Why are women complaining about other women being on a MEN’S magazine? This don’t have nothing to do with yall. It’s a men’s magazine they can put whoever they want on it. Go complain to Ebony, Essense, Vibe ooophs they had Obama on the cover, Jewel, or better yet Black Women Mag. Do yall know that Black Men’s magazine has articles on Obama? Probably Not. Yall are too busy condemning grown women who chooses to pose for a grown man’s magazine.

Do you hear or see any white women complaing to Hugh Heifner about not putting Hiliary Clition on the cover, so they can talk political? Probably Not. Women don’t have a say on who or what should be on a Men’s magazine, nor does Men have a say on who or what should be on a Women’s magazine. Smooth, King, BlackMen etc is a sexy magazine, just like Playboy, Maxium, Stuff etc, all has been and always will, so why add a political person on there now? Like I said all of these magazines don’t have nothing to do with straight women or homosexuals. It’s only aimed at Men or lesbo, lol. So in conclusion, I can’t tell yall what to do or what to say, nor can you tell us. But my advice is: Stop coming in areas that you really not suppost to be in and Stay in your lane.

I expect angry feedback, but it’s the Truth. Have a lovely day Ladies.

    Deep Sigh……..

I am on the other side of this debate as well. The only alternative I can see would have been for Smooth to put a black woman of some historical significance on the cover–and that would probably be downright degrading for the woman chosen! It is essentially a “girly” magazine–along the same lines as Maxim.

Why do some of you keep comparing Smooth to Playboy? Smooth isn’t straight up porn and for Black History month they damn sure could have chosen a more decent and becoming cover. There is nothing wrong with taking a month out of the year, especially in an election year, to clean up your act and contribute more to Black male America than big booty-ied women.

  14. Nefertari said,

    Gravatar IconFebruary 6, 2008 at2:57 pm 4 hours, 37 minutes after

but sis….big bootied women ARE REALLY important to black male America aren’t they? :lol2: and have been very important historically…so its almost relevant to black history. right? I’m joking, trying to keep itlight.
But honestly, I don’t think a “Smooth” magazine cover would help Obama right now. In fact, it would probably hurt him. He is walking a tightrope. There aren’t enough black voters to put him in the white house so he can’t afford to alienate the white voters. I don’t want to see him on the covers of Smooth, King, Vibe, or any other urban/hip hop magazine until he is in the “safe place” where he can do that.

:stop: I find this :booty: rather insulting and blastphomous. The only cover page they could get for “Smooth” black history month issue is some black :booty: ?

And what’s even more imbarrassing, she wasn’t even faced forward…I mean, come on Trina (a*k*a Diamond Princess), if I were you I would walk the streets with a :bag: over my head.

You have contributed to all of the sterotypes and false allegations toward black women and you also made US look extremely unappreciative toward our fallen father’s, who fought for YOU to get on the cover of magazines in the first place.

I believe we all are equal but damnit, some people don’t. And those who don’t, I want them to walk past the paperstand and see conservative, proud, successful, intelligent, sophisticated pictures of black women and men. You can be sophisticated and classy, and still be sexy…Trina.

Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Mya, blah, blah, blah do it all the time and they are bootyful as well. :hmph: I forgive you, but make better career decisions next time, you represent yourself and black women, especially in February.

If they wanted to feature female rappers, they should have got pepa or roxanne shaunte or Latifah or JJ fad or a sista who was there at the birth of hip hop to commemorate black/hip-hop history.

Six years ago I met Trina and Da Brat at a Trendy NYC restaurant…first of all she is not that curvy if anything I was shocked at the fact that she is really petite. She did not come off as a southern sex pot….she looked like a shy person. People have to remember that the camera adds weight and curves depending on the kind of lens and in what position the shot is taken from. Furthermore, photoshop makes people look flawless.

    @ Monique Walker,

We should congratulate Trina on having a nice ***? WTF? Goddamn, where are the expectations!? If I’m known for having a big ***…that’s doing it BIG? WTF?!

Interviewer: Kanyade, what is it you’ve always wanted?

Kanyade: When I grow up I want to be known for having the biggest, best-est-est *** in the whole world. That’s my goal; that’s what I’m striving for and I want everyone to be pulling for me on this front.

I have a D-cup. If I put these puppies on display, should I want for people to congratulate me on my tittyballs? C’mon!

Trina is pretty. A** shots are becoming too cliche. Come with something new; especially for Black History Month. :brownsista: Even if it’s for a men’s mag.

    @ ritch,

You do make a good point. What if the tables were turned? What if it was Essence mag? And the ten most sexilicous Black men in the spread? Hmmm… but would they do A** shots like this? Would they? Would they spread-eagle, drop it like it’s hot and sweep the floor with it for the spread? PROBABLY NOT.

    @ obama 08,

GQ is a men’s magazine. I seem to recall plenty women folk on those covers. Did those covers look like this one? Errr, probably NOT. But I get what you’re saying…this is a certain ‘type’ of men’s mag. It’s basically soft porn. This one, KING, FHM, Details (well maybe not this one), Maxim, etc.

But to call it the Black History Issue. *goes to corner*

I wonder if GQ does a President’s Day issue with YT starlets rearview-vantage point a** shots? Hmmm…

I couldn`t agree more Kanyade. What expectations!!! I usually try to abstain from the personal attacks, however, right about now I am very close to goin’ off on a couple of people. Seems one blogger thinks Trina is saying “kiss my a**” because she doesn`t care what people say about her. Another says we should stop hatin’ and congradulate. C’mon brothas & sistas we are better than that. Trina doesn`t deserve nor will she get any praise from me for cheapening herself to a body part. How shallow!!! I`ll be the first to admit how much I love The Black Woman but we`ve got to get a grasp on more important issues. While we concentrate on the booty the world and more important issues are passing us by.

Just respect yourself, you say, and it doesn`t matter what people say. Well that`s the whole point, Trina has no respect. If she did she`d want to be known for something more than having a big a**. How about a little class, that goes a long way you know. Example: Alicia Keys. Like I said before when you listen to the two of them talk it`s clear as to who has their intellectual game in tack. As soon as Trina speaks for a couple of minutes she`s exposed. She`s the baddest chick??!!?? How so, by having a big a**??!!?? Give me a break!!! This woman needs to do a self inventory and try to discover a thing called, “decency”. Believe me when I tell you I`m not impressed with her one bit. Our black sistas are the least respected of any group of women and this kind of sleeze only perpetuates that kind of thinking.

Believe me when I tell you if I were a celebrity and had of course a celebrity wife and she wanted to pose in this kind of attire, we would have a major problem, a major problem!!! This is nothing more than trash and the stinch is enough to overtake you. I dare to say that Trina probably isn`t capable of holding an intelligent conversation when it comes to current events and the like. Remember I base this assessment on her talk. To be known for an a**, what an honor??!!?? She does nothing for me except make my blood boil in a not so flattering manner. It just shows you her values, or lack thereof. Why is it always hatin’ when people rightfully point out a shortcoming or lack of judgement on the part of another? That`s truly an overused word and seems to be one of our favorites.(Hatin’)

In closing I`ll say Trina has nothing to be proud of because any woman can cheapen herself if she so desires. What will she do when she is no longer young? That`s why she should have something more to offer besides her black a**!!! REAL TALK!!!

Although you make a good point about men should be more political savvy about the ballots, and spent less time thinking about the booty, however when I pick a man’s magazine to view beautiful and curvacious black sista’s the last person I want to see on the cover is Obama,or any man as far as that goes.
I don’t care if he’s running for president,if he’s the Prime Minister, the governor,or King of his own country, when I want to look at bootilicious sista’s than that’s what I want to see at that monment in time, speaking souly of myself, however I think most Black men will agree with me.
And I also agree with James, what does a sexual ,girded at men, magazine has to do with politices,Like James said,”they choose to put on the cover who they want to ,”woman hanve no say so in the matter ,neither do men when it comes to woman’s magazines.

I really like Trina on the cover of Smooth magazine, she looks good, and as far as her being too street savvy, too ghetto as some of you would put it,that’s Trina the artist, not Trina the preson, learn to seperate the two and don’t intertwined them together,no more than you would intertwined a actrist or artist with their real life persona.
If any of you read her interview in Sista to Sista magazine you will find that she is a very intellegent woman, who knows how to carry herself in and out of certain areas and around certain people, she is a lady, but she is not Alicia Keys, nor is Alicia Keys Trina, their two different people ,with two different goals, and from two different back grounds.
I must amitt though I don’t really care for Trina degrading herself ,by refreing to herself as the Baddest B***H,because we black men don’t repect our lovily sista’s enuff as it is,we don’t need you all to be down grading your own selves, but I still like her curvaious body, her strong attitude, her determination to be the best that she can possibily be.

:noway: :stop: My people, my people. That magazine is geared toward the brother’s who love looking at beautiful black curvy women and the toys we love. Like sports, cars, health, entertainment, black gossip, and more beautiful black women. For years we had Vogue, Glamour and all of these other white publications that highlighted what they termed as beauty. The white woman. Now granted, Ebony has been around for years so we did have it and Jet. But that was it. Two magazines compared to how many for them? Now you all would have every right to fall down gasp and die if they had Trina, Janet,Melyssa,Esther,Buffie, or whoever on the cover of..let’s say, Essence magazine in that pose. Don’t pick on Trina. Her and some of her peers are what WE Want to see. It’s OUR magazine and Trina is one of US. Their publications still out number ours 2 to 1. So ladies and a brotha or two don’t attack what little WE have. You all sound like the NAACP and CORE when they labled OUR black cinema “BLAXPLOITATION MOVIES” and put a lot of our favorite actors and actressess out of work and killed what was ours back in the middle 70’s. We had it but it only took a few to tear it down. Now look at us, years later doggin out some of the few magazines WE have to look at. It’s never white folks, the Indian Nation, asians, mexicans, or puerto ricans that bicker like this. It’s always us against us. Sad. :noway:
