Tyra Banks Gets Her Degree

Two years after surprising the world by enrolling in Harvard Business School, 39-year old supermodel Tyra Banks has earned her degree, graduating from the school’s prestigious Owner/President Management Program.

Though an already successful entrepreneur with several lucrative ventures under her belt, Tyra said she went back to school to better learn how to manage those businesses, as well as the multitude of opportunities that were coming her way.

So, what will the CEO of Bankable Productions do with her newfound business knowledge? Well, when being interviewed by Professor Youngme Moon earlier this month, Tyra said she wants to turn her brand into a sustainable legacy and cites Walt Disny and Virgin’s Richard Branson as her role models.

“I’m not looking to build my company based on fans,” she said. “Rather, I feel a responsibility to spread my message of empowerment, self-esteem, and beauty in a way that’s consistent with my ethos and, hopefully, favorable to my bottom line.”

Spoken like a true businesswoman.

  1. Why should Beyonce take notes? If she should I guess Lady Gaga, Katey Perry, Rihanna, Adele, Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike should all take notes too.

  2. What a phenomenal thing to see. I really hope this inspires the, in my opinion, way too many number of african american youth who want to be rappers/singers/etc.

  3. I hope this is a bachelors degree because Tyra never went to college. I guess if you have enough money you can BUY anything. SMH! Its too late for Beyonce on the education front. She’ll just continue being a rich dummy.

  4. @ black, progressive & fabulous,

yeah. i was wondering about that. i was like “does she even have a bachelor’s degree?” yeahh…….that’s kind of foul. still, yay tyra for setting an example.

  5. You need only be the owner/operator of a business in order to apply to Harvard Business School. It is essentially a class for ppl who already have it going on and want to get better.

OPM is ideal for CEOs, COOs, presidents, and managing directors of companies with annual sales of at least $5 million. In addition to being actively involved in running the business, candidates must hold a significant equity stake in their firms.

  6. Congrats to Tyra!!!

Most schools have similar programs, Harvard comes with a lot of respect. I’m sure the classes were tough considering the applicants. She didn’t need a bachelor’s degree for what she wanted. Just like Oprah teaching a class at Northwestern University, based on her vast experience and the business model she created.

Tyra is book smart and got accepted at top schools before leaving the country to model. We know she’s a great entrepreneur and has launched the careers of many others! The last of the supermodels were mavericks and are still relevant, present and accounted for today…Tyra (tv syndication), Iman (makeup, beauty book, television,), Beverly Johnson (wigs, seriously), Veronica Webb (tv, stylist, writer) Cindy Crawford (skincare and beauty books), Kathy Ireland (furniture – home furnishing), Christie Brinkley (fitness equipment, various retail lines, Broadway). I’m sure Tyra will continue to do exceptional things in the business world!

  7. Sista, the companies also have to have revenue of at least 5 million dollars a year. The fact that Tyra even got in was a testament to what an amazing business woman she already was. Can’t believe people are hating on her. Geez. How many people her age with her money would have gone back to school and tried to become better?

Congrats to Tyra for trying to be great while others are happy just being good.

  8. I want to be happy for her but I can’t help but feel that she earned it with Celebrity brownie points. I know I know, I sound like a hater. I truly don’t mean to be, but you just can’t help but wonder, ya know? However it is inspiring because I have another year of College to go! Whoohoo!!

  9. I don’t get it. What is there to wonder about? Do you also wonder about the other millionaires in Tyra’s class who graduated along with her?

  10. Tyra got a Business School Certificate. She didn’t get a degree, big difference. To get a degree, you have to follow a course class of 3 or 4 years. Again big difference.

  11. @ Anjel, you don’t have to understand. They are MY thoughts that’s all. Nothing else to it. Don’t like it?……your perogative

  12. Happy for her! So glad she’s doing something positive with her resources.

  13. GO TB!!!!!!!!!!! Girl you’d better WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂

So happy for her, and IMO she’s a true inspiration to many!!!!

  14. @ Black, Progessive & Fabulous…
Actually, if I’m not mistaken, Tyra was attending Loyola-Marymount here in Los Angeles when her modeling career took off. I’m guessing that she figured that she could return to college at a later time.
