Tyra Banks Wins Her First Daytime Emmy

Daytime chat queen Tyra Banks has a lot to be happy about tonight as her talk show, The Tyra Banks Show, earned it’s first Emmy Award for Outstanding Informative Talk Show. The model turned actress, turned talk show hostess beat out some stiff competition to take home the honor, as both The Dr. Phil Show and A Place Of Our Own, were nominated as well. “I’m shaking,” Tyra, the show’s host and executive producer, said as she took the stage to collect her prize. “I have such a strong history with daytime television. My mama… Where’s my mama? My mama’s crying like a baby! Hi Mama,” Banks said, explaining how she spent many days when she was growing up, watching soap operas and talk shows with her grandmother while her mother worked two jobs.

As many of you know, Tyra’s show originally struggled in the ratings and was on the cusp of being canceled before a makeover and move to New York changed everything. With less boo-hoo-ing from skinny teenage suburban girls who feel ugly because they are size 2 rather than a size 0, and more emphasis on celebrity interviews, Tyra’s ratings slowly rose and she now easily wins her time slot in markets where her talk show is aired.

Tyra once said she wanted to be the next Oprah, and with an Emmy under her belt I think she moves one step closer to that dream.

Whoa, an Emmy! Good for her, I like Tyra…don’t watch daytime TV much but the few times I managed to catch her show it was really interesting…not Oprah but she’s definitely on her way. Love that she’s big on “girl power”…Go on girl!!!!

Yes, Yes, and Yes! Go Tyra, and never stop. I love her show, and while some of her serious episodes make me laugh when I’m not supposed to, I look forward to watching when I can. The dress isn’t terrible, but that hair is. What happened to the darker shade she usually wears? She gets it right on many ‘every days’, yet gets it wrong on a special day. I don’t know how celebs manage to do that, but they do.

Congratulations to her though, and I hope she has many more seasons and gets better with each one. I truly admire her drive, business sense, and for making things happen for herself by proving she’s more than a pretty face.

Tyra’s hair is a cry for help. My gosh that woman wants to look white. As for that dress, Scarlett O’Hara called and she wants her drapes back.

Like India Irie sings “I am not my hair”, Tyra Banks is NOT her hair. I don’t follow the logic if a ‘Black’ woman straighten her tick curls, or if she wears a wig [whatever color, lenght/style], she’s trying to be ‘White’. I love long hair [Believe it or not some people love short hair accross the racial barrier we build around ourselves]. I don’t care if it’s the thickest curls, loose curls, straight, braided, or in dreads. Imagine my horror when I did the big choped lol[ I'm going back to my natural roots to improve my health & to get some sexy dreads]. I’m not so big on colors though. Because I love grey/white hair on a mature people, I would love for my own hair to grey naturally if I get to be their age lol. Back to the point…hair shouldn’t define who a person is. We crave different styles & sometimes different colors every once in a while.

Forget her hair. She should be free to express herself as she chooses by her own standards. She needs to step up with quality programming on that tacky show. That Emmy is totally a guilt trip by white folks because they took away a well deserved more important award from another black person in another category. We all know deep down that show is far from Emmy material. But, white folks had to compensate for giving 99.9% of the other awards to undeserving white actors. We can’t consider everyone of these awards a win unless we look at the bigger picture, more of our talent are losing than being acknowledge or awarded.

I agree with Charden, Tyra’ s show is not emmy worthy. In my opion she comes across as so fake and over the top on that show. I guess they had to give it to someone…

Charden exempt me from “We ALL know deep down that the show is far from Emmy material”. Although I hardly watch TV [Because of the propaganda machine that it is], I sometimes find her show interesting & educational [Even 2 of my older TV loving brothers watch that show LOL]. Since she gets good ratings, it’s NOT underserving by any means. If she wasn’t in the same category as that other ‘Black’ personality, how did you come to the conclusion she’s less deserving them him/her in her OWN category?

I don’t think good rating automatically make a show emmy worthy. Jerry Springer got good ratings…was he emmy worthy?

Hey! I used to watch Jerry Springer lol. It may not be your cup of tea, but it’s interesting [The fights, pole dancing, chest flashing...lol, and it brings foward some unimaginable sujects you would never know go on behind close doors, some subject other shows won't DARE touch]. Needless to say, it has it’s audience, and it opens your imagination. Whose to say it’s not Emmy worthy. It’s fill with raw emotions, comedy, good ratings…

I like you already, Ms. “Fleur”. You have a very pretty name. “Fleur” means “flower” in French. “Snijana” is new to me. Please educate me a little; what does “Snijana” mean?
You say that Tyra’s show is “interesting & educational” and I agree 100%.

    Sorry, I have to defend Tyra;

She has had several topics that specifically address African American Women’s issues. I just watched a show the otherday about the lack of african american women in good acting roles and the disparagement in pay.

    Who else does this? Anyone?

The hair is another issue but it’s all part of her image. I give her a pass.

Click on my name and see what I wrote about her today. Thanks.

Thank you Smooth Thug. Yes, Fleur means flower in French. I don’t know what Snijana means in ANY language. I picked it up in a book I was reading. It’s a hobby of mine to write down beautiful name I… DISCOVER [like C.Columbus lol]…possibly for my future children lol. I 1st combine the 2 together for my you tube account. I was pleasently supprised it wasn’t taken by anyone.

Thanks Dark sista. The name Agni/Snijana is more meaningful to me now that I know what it stands for. Come to think of it, I stick to my gun when debating my point of view lol…I don’t fogive easily. It must have spoken me subconsciously when I decided it was the 2nd name I’d want to give myself…aside from the one my parents chose for me.

Congrats Ms Tyra,,,,your show is fine. I am glad they changed the format. I love the dress, but her hair would complement her better if it were only highlighted with the blong, instead of being blong all over.
@Fleur, I agree she is not her hair. We are used to seeing Tyra looking fab all the time. I think what we do with out hair is a personal choice. I mean there are so many different styles out there for a sistas to choose from. There is no reason for any sista’s head to look a mess these days. I would love to experiment with some “sexy dreads” or some type of natural locks. I wish more black women would have more confidence in themselves to know and understand that “HAIR DOES NOT MAKE A WOMAN”.
My neice told me that hair is viewed as an accessory, I told her “well if it is removable at any time then I guess it is.” I’m just not into the weaves, but I love me some BRAIDS!!!!! (smile)

tyra is clearly her hair please you african women dont try and play yourself that wig on her is head ok, is trying to emulate european hair so please dont tell me that crap of she can wear what she wants. its like a white woman sporting an afro and they say its all good. tyra even admits she is a slave to her wigs in antm, and indeed she is a slave what the heck is she trying to be. spot tring to look as white as possiple hence the multiple nose jobs and european wigs….

Railene, Charden, and some of ya’ll need to quit hating. A highly successful black woman won an Emmy and ya’ll just can’t give credit where credit is due. That’s typical of black women though. Always have to throw negativity in there. If you don’t like her show, don’t watch it.

    CONGRATS Tyra.

For those of you that think her show is not Emmy worthy, who’s show is? It’s OK to be silly sometimes. She does not have to be Barabara Walters or Oprah. She’s a different person and has a different kind of show that caters to a younger crowd. What’s wrong with that? She has a lot going for her beyond her talk show, and I love how she constantly tries to uplift black women in her media projects.
