Tyra Banks Covers Essence Magazine

posted by Sista on January 8th, 2008 at 9:34 am

I’ll admit it- I haven’t really paid much attention to Tyra Banks in years and don’t really watch either of her television shows. Still, Tyra is Brown Sista Icon and so when she does something noteworthy I am more than happy to showcase it here. Such is the case with Tyra covering the February 2008 edition of Essence Magazine. And it is not so much Tyra landing the cover, something she done twice previously, but rather what she talks about in her interview with Jeannine Turner. It seems Tyra is none to happy with the opportunities for Black women in Hollywood and is poised to do something about it. After reading December’s issue of Essence with Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle Union and Nia Long, Tyra said “It really upset me to read about how the money they make doesn’t match up.” In fact, after reading that article, she phoned her mother at 5:30 in the morning and announced, “Ma, I have a new calling.” So now Tyra, who is the Executive Producer of not one but two television shows and who recently inked a multi-year development deal with Warner Bros. Entertainment, may actually be in a position to turn things around for Black women in Hollywood- and is making plans as we speak to do just that.

Read more about what Tyra has up her sleeve on Essence’s Official Website and don’t forget to pick up your copy which is on news-stands now.

… and don’t you guys just love it when a sista sees something wrong and instead of just complaining about it, actually goes about doing something to change it? Tyra is like a new-age Oprah- with a wonder bra. (LOL)

  1. Nice to see a site not calling her doofy or fat. Tyra is actually quite smart and knows that to control and own your own destiny is the only way to go. It is funny you mentioned Oprah too cause Tyra said she learned all she knows from Oprah. Like Lady O Tyra is definitely going to branch out into movies employing Black women in front of and behind the camera. I’m with her all the way. Go Tyra. :brownsista:

  2. I’m happy for her success, but I’d be lying if I said she didn’t get on my nerves sometimes. And that’s really just with watching her on her show… I ’see’ her trying to be like Oprah (speechwise, stance, posture all that). And Lady O is the perfect role model for talk shows and such, but Ms. Tyra pushes it too far, forces it too much; she’s TOO nosy. LOL. See any interview she’s done with celebs on her show. LOL. But all in all, I love America’s Next Top Model and think Tyra should be credited with coining the phrase of: smile with your eyes  although I’m sure there are many a photographer out there who use those words on a daily basis. Kudos to her media achievements and here’s hoping she’ll be the next Oprah or … what’s the lady who owns TVOne??? Cathy Hughes??? Yup. I can definitely see Tyra going this route.

  3. I like Tyra. She is dilly but her heart is in the right place. and I agree 100% with her as far as the money black women receive…not to mention the roles that they are offered. Go head Tyra and start with the Wo(man) in the Mirror :hmph:

  4. and don’t you guys just love it when a sista sees something wrong and instead of just complaining about it, actually goes about doing something to change it? Tyra is like a new-age Oprah- with a wonder bra. (LOL)

  5. Must the writers on this blog always try to be so damn positive? Tyra is an airhead and should be called an airhead. Some sistas are crappy singers, dancers and actresses and it should just be said. Get some back bone like the other blog writers and stop acting like every Black woman out there is a saint. Beyonce is a no acting freak, Janet is old and her music is tired and Tyra Banks acts like she should be riding the VERY short yellow bus. Deal with it and admit it. :stop:

  6. I know that’s right…do your thing Tyra

  7. I never watch her show either, but I do go to her site to check out what she’s wearing.

  8. I THINK I SPEAK FOR EVERYONE WHEN I SAY SHUT UP TO THE “DAMN” HATER ON THIS BLOG. WHY CAN’T U LIFT UP A SISTER INSTEAD OF BRING HER DOWN. U SHOULD GET SOME LOVE AND YOUR LIFE AND GET THAT HATE OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM

  9. WOW DAMN-DAMN-DAMN U JUST GOING ALL OUT ABOUT TYRA. TYRA SHE ALRIGHT BUT SHE NOT REAL (JAY-Z QUOTE LOL). IM HAPPY SHE DOING HER THING BUT SOMETIME SHE BE GETTING ON NERVES ESPECIALLY ON ANTM BUT IT WHAT IT IS. ALL MY SISTER THAT BE QUOTING ON THIS SITE DO YOUR THANG IN THE 08.

  10. Love Tyra and I like the way she goes after what she wants and she does things that matter to us! Do your thing – Mini Oprah!

  11. I’ll admit, I can’t stomach her sometimes on her talk show, even though I DVR it everyday! :) But I like some of the celeb interviews cuz she asks questions that nobody else asks, even if sometimes they’re uncalled for. The parts where she starts actin crazy, I just forward through. :) But you gotta give it up to her, she is definitely doing her thing and not afraid to reach back and help others along the way, which, unfortunately for us, is rare.

  12. I think Tyra talks a little too much on her show. She is always saying,” One time I was dating this guy” She said that with like 5 different stories.

  13. Don’t get me wrong I like her but you don’t want to give the wrong impression, in that regard.

  14.
I think Tyra talks a little too much on her show. She is always saying,” One time I was dating this guy” She said that with like 5 different stories.

AHAHAHAHA- that’s so funny cause soemtimes, my sister and I think we’re the only ones who notice how Tyra LOVES to talk about herself! I think she ask specific questions to her guest just so she can mention something about herself that she’s been wanting to mention  … that daggone Tyra  , gotta love her though!

  15. Yeah she’s a chatterbox and yes she works a nerve! but ya gotta love this sister.

  16. I think everyone has an annoying friend and or relative. I think she talks about herself to make herself seem personable but it just comes across wrong. same thing goes for the silliness. I appreciate her caring about the black hollywood community. most black celebs only care about their check, I don’t see many other black female celebrities giving back. Go Tyra do ya thing love ANTM My daughter I watch together every season.

  17. Nice! I love Tyra and her shows. I love ANTM and her talk show. Yes, she talks. A lot. She never fails to bring herself into a conversation (I actually find it more funny than annoying because I don’t think she means any harm). However, with all that said, I’m glad that Tyra does have plans to do more than just talk and is giving more opportunities to black women, and furthermore all women. She’s not my idol or anything, but I do respect her for making it as far as she has and taking her career further than just the runway. Her show, regardless of her chirpy nature at times, has hit on some real issues beyond the new fashion fads or blue jeans. Go Tyra!

  18. I do respect this womans hustle. Cree is right in saying that she gets dogged in the news but she is a true hustler and seems to have good intentions.

  19. LOVE TYRA!

  20. tyra does talk a little much about herself. but i still think she is likable. sort of. i don’t understand when people say she’s ugly to me she’ll always be a supermodel a real supermodel.

  21. Among the many talkshows i have watched by sisters,Ananda Lewis was 8/10, Queen Latifah was 9/10. Tyra gets a 7/10 (which is good) because i think there is a certain aura that surrounds talkshow hosts that she lacks. Oprah of 5 years ago gets 11/10… Oprah now gets 7/10 ,so Tyra ain’t doin bad. AND I AIN’T HATIN HERE.. JUST GIVIN MA HONEST OPINION about her show. When it comes to looks well well tahat baby been bangin since time immemorial.

  22. I don’t know if it’s really fair to say that Tyra is the next Oprah or anything because they’re in different catagories and appeal to a completely different genre. However I am a fan of Tyra and am very happy to see that she’s using her celebrity in a positive productive way. I also find it pretty disturbing that we as people (especially black) tend to look at the faults and negative of others first, before we focus on the positive. As far her being a chatter box I should hope so, after all a TALK show host shouldn’t exactly be quiet, but I’m sure she doesn’t mean any harm, she’s good people!

  23. TYRA IS SO ANNOYING I CAN’T BEAR TO WATCH HER SHOW

  24. I love Tyra she making that loot!! Besides she one of a handful of A-listers that actually step up to the plate.

  25. I must say that I was never a big fan of Tyra-The Model (maybe because back then there wasn’t so much emphasis on celebrities) at any rate, I have come to admire her and women who like her, are positive accomplished black women. With a woman like Oprah to look up to, inspires Tyra to do the same and hopefully take it to the next level.

I do have to admit she does talk too much and sometimes I am like “Damn Tee would you please let so and so talk”. At the end of the day I think, that is the way she is; love her or leave her “Flaws and All”.

There are some really good topics on her show depending on the episode. After reading this article I am not all that suprise that she is trying to make things happen. Tyra’s fustrations about the opportunities within our community is very evident regardless of whose in the audience. I respect her for caring about the struggles of the “everyday” black woman even though she has made it herself. It takes a really good person to care the way she does.

  26. I love Tyra and I really hope she does follow up what she says and creates more opportunities for Black women in Hollywood. I would like to see more Black women win on ANTM too!!

  27. Well Damn, stop coming to a positive site then, since positivety is not your cup of tea. There’s no shortage of dumb sites where they take in simple-minded people like you.

  28. Which is why y’all need to leave this sister alone and let her DO what she do for you. She has the bank and the influence. Somebody needs to do something for our image and fast. You certainly can’t count on any brothers to do it.

  29. and let’s try to APPRECIATE and not HATE a sister who is doing it. She has fame, influence, property, assets and then some. Not only that, she cares about black women (some of which are ungrateful, bitter haters) enough to DO something to make a change. AND she’s NOT ugly, she’s beautiful and takes care of what God gave her (unlike many of us) AND she works hard. I appreciate you and I’m with you all the way Tyra – do what you do!!!!

  30. Words actually DO have power. Perhaps once we start saying positive and pleasant things about one another, we will actually BE better, FEEL better about ourselves and then LOOK better to ourselves and the rest of the world. Do to others what you’d want them to do to you – because what goes around does come around.

  31. Personally, I think brothers now days have it hard,oh it’s their fault. Why you say? This has been going on since the beginning of time. You see God created man first, but man don’t want to control anything for fear of his help mate(woman) coming down on him. Sometimes in order to be a man you have to humble yourself to say i’m not always right but i’m doing all that I can. And in order to do it right you have to take risks, because nobody has all the answers. It’s okay for a man to be afraid, to cry, that’s not weakness. A man that can’t put anger aside(a thug) can’t show love.

  32. I’m not following you – can you please explain a little more? How have they humbled themselves? Maybe back in slavery days they did, but now they don’t have it hard at all, especially since the white people (men & women are loving them). They get picked for commercial ads, they get positive heroic TV and movie roles with white or non-black women at their side supporting actress. They are IT now, and aren’t looking back to think about us.
And nobody (not their mothers nor their sisters) is telling them how this “interracial marriage initiative” that’s been sweeping the nation over the past decade and a half easily leads to racial genocide. It’s not that hard to wipe our race out in this country – especially with the stereotype of black men and women not able to get along because of the “witchy” black women. Image-wise, we are at the bottom of the list. If we don’t do something about fixing that sooner, we WILL be OUT and our legacy will only be seen in history books. It takes a black man and a black women together to keep a race alive.

  33. More Power to you Ms Tyra……
Good Luck on everything to help our sistas make the cash they deserve!!!

    :brownsista:

  34. :dance1: :-D GOOD FOR TYRA!!!  WE NEED MORE OF OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN :brownsista: FOLK OUT ON THE BIG SCREENS. :hifive: & NOT JUS (THE SAME 1’s) ALL THE TIME. GIVE EVERYBODY A CHANCE, IT’S ENOUGH 2 GO AROUND.
