Vesta Williams Has Passed On

Awful news to report today. R & B singer Vesta, best known for her 1989 hit “Congratulations,” was found dead late last night in a California hotel room.

No immediate details surrounding the 48-year old singer’s death have been made available, that however did not stop fans and fellow artists from flooding Twitter with tributes and words of condolences.

Singer Shanice tweeted: “My friend Vesta died… I can’t believe this… RIP.”

Former BET VJ Donnie Simpson added: “Vesta Williams had an amazing voice & a cool, down, funny personality. A Kool Breeze just came thru Heavens gates. You will be missed Vesta.”

Actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, who worked with Vesta many times over the years via her ‘Divas Simply Singing’ charity event, added these words: “I am so deeply saddened at the passing of my diva friend Vesta Williams. RIP Vesta.”

For the younger generation who may not know this legendary singer, check her ‘Congratulations’ video below. It was the theme song for every heartbroken sidechick back in the 80’s.

  1. I was 9 years old when “Congratulations” came out and I remember everytime I would watch Video Soul there were two songs I would wait for… “Something About the Way You Make Me Feel” By Stephanie Mills and Vesta’s “Congratulations”. I was 9 yall and these were grown women not teeny boppers or what have you. So my point is record exes need to give the younger people more credit, if the song is a hit we can enjoy classic R&B!

  2. RIP Vesta.

Always thought she sounded like Chaka. BlackSista, totally agree with you. Back then you would actually hear artists in their 30s and 40s on the radio and enjoying success on the charts. Today, the music industry is pure insanity. If you are not a teen or in your early 20s you can pretty much forget about having any kind of success.

  3. Rip Vesta
I loved loved loved “once bitten, twice shy”, Wonderful talent.
