Video: Alicia Keys Superwoman
Stephanie on July 15, 2008 at 9:44 am (1 month, 3 weeks ago)
Alicia Key’s four times platinum album “As I Am” has spawned it’s fourth single and video. “Superwoman” pays tribute to all types of women, ranging from the struggling mother on public assistance to the single working mom trying to balance family and career. The video was filmed last month during a two day shoot (June 9-10) at the LA Center Studios and was directed by Chris Robinson, who has worked on several of Alicia’s videos in the past (Teenage Love Affair, You Don’t Know My Name). The treatment for Superwoman apparently came from actress Jada Pinkett Smith, who not only acted as co-director but also makes a special cameo appearance in the video as well.
Check it out below…

Dull. I don’t like the BLACK SUPERWOMAN moniker either. We are not SUPERWOMEN and cannot do it alll just because we oftentimes do not have help. It is difficult working and raising children alone. Most women are not SUPERWOMEN and often struggle with depression and other anxieties that come from having to be all things; mother, father, provider. I know Alicia meant well and it is just a video, but this is my take on things. Jada Pinkett is a joke too. She is rolling in dough and can easily raise her own kids but has admitted to having plenty of hired help to cope with family and a career she could have easily put on hold to be there personally for her children.
Majesa said,
This is my favorite song from her album, and I love that’s she’s releasing it. I love Jada Pinkett, too.
Teeda said,
Sari, it sounds like you’re venting about other things. There is nothing wrong with this video, and in this day in age, I welcome this POSITIVE video. She’s is not saying that black women don’t need male figures in their lives. She is simply making the statement that we can rise above our hardships to make HUGE accomplishments in life no matter what the circumstances are. This video is wonderful, and it may inspire some young children to reach for great heights.
People kill me when they find something negative in absolutely everything. Would you rather she prance around half naked in the video? Jeesh.

That was soooooooo beautiful! This is by far my most favorite song off the album and I am soo happy she did a video for it. Really pays homage to the women who does so much yet their actions go unnoticed. I dedicate this to my mom and all the women out there,
To Sari–Alicia visual concept of a superwoman is not that a woman CAN do it all- it is for those who DO it all and she is letting them know “we notice, we hear your cries” In this world it is a damn if u do and damned if don’t. Too many times mothers, women who do good…are expected to be better(hence your judgemental comment regarding Jada Pinkett Smith). Women who do bad are known as no good mothers. There are plenty of women out there that BURST THEIR HINDPARTS to make a good living for themselves and children and they do it without need of fame or recognition. Alicia is telling them we see…and we honor and applaud your efforts. To much judgement is passed on those who make too much and those who make too little. It is time as women(black, white, red or blue) to STAND UP and STAND TOGETHER. Help one up instead of kicking them down. Once again to Sari and all the women on this board and around the world..i dedicate this video to you…and remember that even when you are a mess, you put on your vest with the S on your chest…Because you are indeed a superwoman.

Nice message, yes Majesa, this is my favorite song also. My husband used to be like “can you play ANOTHER song” I like the video it had a great message. I did not like how Jada was rockin/or boppin at the end of the video… a still shot would have been nice. None the less it was great. I am begining to like Jada, I was hating b/c she married will.

I fell you. I understand where you are coming from. But the great thing about this video is that it shows our young women that you can be more and strive for more than being a video hood rat. She is raising the game to a whole nother level for young women.
We are living in the time where young women are doing everything by themselves and I don’t she is telling them you can’t do it or you shouldn’t do it. I think she is just showing every aspect of our lives. Showing that young mother you don’t have to stop living because you had children. Make your life better for you and your children. I love this video and I hope it is a great success. But Sari, we can’t complain about the videos that’s out all the time and then when a great one showing the ultimate respect for women come out we complain about it. We have too embrace positive images like this just like we have embraced the negative.

@ Ashley, but lately Alicia has been wiggling her bootay and tossing her hair around as well! Hope she stays true to herself. All of the tour reviews mention the painful jiggling of the hips, but state she’s at her best form when sitting behind her piano. Love the video by the way!

I think Alicia’s trying to send the message “You’re a SuperWoman” for encouragement. To let us know that yeah, you might be doing this all on your own, but you can still come through and save the people that you’re doing it for.
Jada is a celebrity, which means that she’s often away from home. That’s why a lot of celebs have kids at such a late time in life. They wanna make sure their money is right, so when they do start making a family, everyone can be comfortable and live financially free. I bet Jada’s kids would never trade in the lives they’ve lived. She did it for them and herself.
This video made me cry. It’s a positive uplift for all women, especially blacks, because we do honestly have it harder than the rest. There’s stereotypes for us no matter what kind’a home we were born into. This video is just showing that we are strong, just like SuperWoman, and we can conquer anything — being a CEO, a mogul, singer, actress, astronaut, rocket scientist — whatever we want to be, all while being a mom, a student, a BLACK WOMAN.
well well well said,
Good Job Alicia Keys! She always brings it for the real sisters….I’m not goign to mention any negativity I have heard on here because you always have on unhappy camper-one who is always unhappy…always…So kudos Alicia letting the world know “Black Women” DO IT ALL! AND Dangit..we do…..

She show me another side of her that i did not know she had. But im happy that alicia keys music is soulful something that we need this day in ages. Because the music we have out not is a bunch of BS. Her song got meaning something to think about when you do listening to her.

I wait anxiously for a video for Lessons Learned which is my favorite song from this awesome record.
Superwoman exists in theory like being a goddess or heck a queen (for those of us who aren’t officially…..and even for those who are. The beauty of the moniker lies in striving to BE, aspiring, hoping, wishing, praying while WORKING towards our better selves. This song is a shining example of gentle, not-over-the-top POSITIVITY and I love Alicia for it.

I hear you though, girl.
Personally, I liked it. I liked the message she was trying to put out there.
I think of my mother as a Superwoman. She came from a huge family. The 13th child of 15. Her parents didn’t have much AT ALL. She was the 1st to go to college and finished (even after having my oldest brother her Sophomore year of college and she and my father getting married). She had four more children. Was/is a high school teacher, loved her job {still does}. My father was military so he was gone quite a bit. She bascially raised us on her own {somewhat} as we traveled across the world. Getting up in the mornings, making sure everybody had breakfast, making sure we all dressed neat and clean, would come home- even after staying after with somebody’s child, would cook dinner, helped with homework and would then take us to practices or recitals and Bible Study. Always praying with us. Never going w/o saying she loves us and showing affection. She still managed to get her Masters and PhD and currently has 1 child who completed service in the military and now has his own production company, 3 college graduates who have become (1)a police officer, (1)an engineer for a big company and (me)an Esthetician} and will have a Spelman College graduate in a couple of years. I guess I’m reflecting not only because of Alicia’s song/video but because my mother’s birthday is tomorrow (58 years old and not a looking a day over 35). I just don’t know how she managed to do it all. Still remained classy and beautiful & spoiled us all rotten! I mean, we had just about everything we wanted. Instilled the impotance of Christ being first in our lives. She was always so honest with us about life. My mother is simply amazing to me… that’s my Superwoman- forever!

I have big hips and when you dance they always seem like they have a mind of their own. When you are hippy like her and alot of other women of color your hips are always going to look suggestive when you dance. Because they are hips and that’s just what they do.
I have seen her dance, she won’t win a contest or anything like that but it’s not that bad. She is just hippy so her hips are going to seem like they are moving more than they are.

THIS VIDEO IS BEAUTIFUL.
There is nothing wrong with Ms. Keys dancing to her own music. There is nothing in her image that indicates that she is selling sex. She has gracefully transitioned to one who is embracing her feminimity without being ******.
@ Sari
I understand your point but the reality for women worldwide is that we do carry the brunt of the burden of keeping our families together. American and western women, even those who are single and live in the projects have it easier than the so called 3rd world women with husbands. Some of these women have to gather firewood for each and every meal and daily walk miles to fetch some dirty water to their days work.
@Nne
Go on, girl. Sing your momma’s praises. It is always good to hear about black families who take full responsibility of their lives and take full advantage of what this country has to offer.

THIS IS NOT THE TYPICAL “SUPERWOMAN” definition that Alicia is giving with this song.
Sari, I see your point, but she’s not saying “we can and SHOULD do it all by ourselves and we don’t need a man”, it’s deeper than that, there are MANY powerful messages in the video, OBSERVE all the elements :
- A female ASTRONAUT, meaning don’t ever let anyone tell you SCIENCE ain’t for women
- A female Entrepreneur and Actress (Jada), meaning you can be a wife, a mother (she didn’t choose Jada just because, she chose a worldwide famous wife and mother to make it clear that it’s for the married ones) but your life doesn’t revolve around just that, you can still follow your passion and reach your full potential as an individual.
- An african student, meaning education is the key and little girls ARE the future!!
- A single mother of two who’s been accepted in university (read the paper she’s holding), message : to those who “do it all”, we pay hommage to you, and regardless of your present situation, even as a single mother, your life isn’t “over”, you can make it, have dreams and plans and pursue them
- the Cleopatra theme, meaning that we are QUEENS, powerful beings, and we should SIT ON OUR THRONES and take (back) our power
Alicia basically said with this video that we have powerful and limitless beings, that women, regardless of their situations, whether living lavishly, in poverty, married mothers, single mothers, scientists, businesswomen, are special, diverse and born LEADERS. We can do and be whatever we want to be. We’re unstoppable beings and we should be aware of our worth and potential.
I am a SuperWoman, yes I am!

People overuse “selling sex”. Women like Alicia Keys or Aaliyah (rip), I’ve never seen them as “sex selling” women because they’ve never looked like strippers on stage or video chicks. SEX has never been the element of their image (unlike say, Christina Milian). Even when Aaliyah sang rock the boat it was poetic not salacious (ala Lil Kim). To me those are SENSUAL artists not SEXUAL artists. Same for the guys, I think Ginuwine is rather SEXUAL (oil all over the place) while Boyz II Men were more like SENSUAL (talking about making love, in a profound/poetic way).

Even though I was praying for “I Need You” to be the next single. The “Superwoman” video is so SUPER!!!! I love it. Alicia always does thing big & positive. Stay true to herself is why she is so successful!
KSH said,
@JRockin:
I agree with you 100%. I think that there are def artist that are sensual and those that are sexual. People like Joe, Maxwell & Raheem Davaughn are very sensual and very romantic, where R. Kelly (pedi pee) & Ginuwine are very sexual. But there are artist who can turn in on and off like Tyrese, The Isley Brothers, Jamie Foxx, Robin Thicke - they can be subtle and sensual but sexual too.
Jill Scott is like that, she has this very sensual side to her but she also has a subtle sexuality that is obvious. It’s all about the balance
KSH said,
@kelis:
It’s okay to be a sexy Superwoman too. There is nothing wrong with being sensual and sexual as long that is not what your all about. She is not Cassie or Christina M. (whom I like) - she has loads of talent to back up her gyrating hips. Nothing wrong with sexy as long as it is not your claim to fame, the ONLY thing you can do or you overuse it to sell reocrds you are fine.
I saw Alicia’s show ans it was a great mix of straight talent, love of self and others and some fun.

Powerful. It’s wonderful that she’s commercially successful but still remains true to her passion - music. Her music seeks to empower Black women and she does a wonderful job expressing our diverse spirits in song. This video exhibits to me that although we’re not in the same place (mentally, financially, spiritually, etc), as sisters, WE should also RESPECT each other. The images depict different women in varying situations but they’re still regarded as Superwomen. How beautiful!!!

Its not about being a stan Little thing , its about appreciating the REAL sisters and not trying to take anything away from them. How many of our entertainer finished high school? let alone graduated from college? We need to tell our daughters that although being fine and getting bodied under their umbrella can be fun at time, we came from so far and we still have to prove ourselves not only as women but as African American.
YOu damn right she don’t make or break me
[I'm grown already i found myself but i know its not the case for everyone...]
but she sure as hell make or break the next little girl sitting in her house in the project watching her video, and instead of concentrating on growing a butt and hips to be “America’s next ghetto video HO” she will do her homework, help her mother do the dishes and/or watch after her little brother when mama goes to work , trying to be a super woman. Little thing like this make so much difference in our community , Its about inspiration and the message sent to our youth.
Don’t tell me anything about class because i have 100% more class then you will never have which is why if i don’t hear or see anything i don’t run my mouth like i was there and seen it . YOu have a degree yet here you are acting like another hood rat ready to get her razor and her Vaseline to go against a woman that did nothing to you
The fact is there is no proof at all that Alicia did anything with swizz “white girl lover” beat , just a jealous wife looking for atention.. and rumors. I mean give the sister some props she is too much of a lady to get down like that
I know your type and i hope you know that all that noise is not about to take anything away from the sister because she has one thing that none of you ghetto heifers have and that’s an education.
IT is sad that just because Alicia never said an ignorant thing and always come across as an educated woman people have to make stuff up to put her down first they said she was manly and now she upgrade to husband snatcher…
Pathetic
Now get off of her and go deal with the woman that wrecked your home !!!!

You stated and I quote-
“Little thing like this make so much difference in our community, it’s about inspiration and the message sent to our youth.”
And then you go to say -
I know your type and I hope you know that all that noise is not about to take anything away from the sister because she has one thing that none of you ghetto heifers have and that’s an education.
So all in 1 reply you talk about building up sista and then you go on to TRY to break me down… yeah your one to “inspire”…lol.
And to the last desperate attempt to “shut me down”(lol) this comment
Now get off of her and go deal with the woman that wrecked your home!!!!
YOU SO TYPICAL!!!! LOL…LOL now you can continue to rant and rave…
and for the record i have never lived in the ghetto, not thats there anything against the ghetto. i have done work with the youth and have several programs in the lower income neighborhoods where i teach that its not where you are from but where you are going! and your little rant and rave has belittle people less fortunate and thats not right BUT your such a uplifting sister.. what a joke
LOL.. I STILL CANT GET OVER YOUR COMMENT-
one thing that none of you ghetto heifers have and that’s an education.
AND ANOTHER QUESTION FOR YOU WHY IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM OR ISSUES WITH SOMEONE YOU REFERR TO GHETTO ? I think you have real issues with this and need to seek help. i have read your post in the past and they seem to have the same key word.. ghetto..hhmmmmm
dark sista said,
Why is it your last reply? I’m not scaring you i hope?
I hate to talk to you teenagers because once you receive a slap in the face you try to make everyone feel sorry for you. I call hood rat every woman that get in the middle of something that does not concern her and get her claws ready , when no one even knows or uttered a word about her, IN my book you act like a hood rat so you are one,
regardless of what you say in return. JUst when you said “i have never lived in the ghetto” and try to soften your comment with the “not thats there anything against the ghetto” that was a dead give away…
Like when a woman say “IM NOT DARK SKINNED but i understand what dark girls feels like when people try to put them down”, Just like it doesn’t matter what color you are to be offended by a comment , i have met women that lived in INglewood and were 100% classier than you so please take that somewhere else ; it doesn’t matter where you live you can be a Beverly hills hood rat for all I know.
I also think that you’re a liar when you talk about doing work for the youth because if you were an humanitarian
you will side along with sisters that try to show our youth the right path … let me guess you’re praise other entertainer the one with the p-u-ss-y showing when they perform but you have a problem with keys? That’s what i meant by i know your kind! cuz i do HOmegirl
I have a problem with ghettos , i sure do i believe that isn’t where our community should be trapped , but that’s another debate , i call it like i see it , next time you don’t know **** about something don’t talk about it.
