“How to Get Away with Murder” actress Viola Davis won Favorite Actress in a New TV Series at last night’s People’s Choice Awards.
Viola was up against some pretty stiff competition, including Jada Pinkett Smith, who has garnered across the board acclaim for her portrayal of Fish Mooney in Fox’s break-out comic book thriller “Gotham.”
While accepting her award Viola referenced Alessandra Stanley’s widely-panned New York Times article which called Shonda Rhimes an “angry black woman” and referred to Viola as being dark-skinned and less classically beautiful than other black women on TV.
“Thank you Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Peter Norwalk,” Viola said to cheers. “For thinking of a leading lady who looks like my classic beauty.”
Since debuting last season, “How to Get Away with Murder” has been a powerhouse in the ratings and became the most watched show ever via DVR, garnering six millions viewers, a tally that helped bring the show’s debut episode to just over 20 million viewers.
