What’s Next for Nicole Beharie, A Musical Perhaps?
Let’s keep it real, Sleepy Hollow is done. After remaining stable in its new Friday night, 8pm time slot for several weeks, the show’s ratings have suddenly plummeted, falling to a series low of 2.5 million viewers and a 0.6 demo. Fox owned or not, the chances of the show getting a fourth season are not looking well. So, with that said, let’s talk about Nicole Beharie and what we’d like to see her next career move be.
Personally, I’d like to see Nicole remain a part of the Fox family, and I’ve already found the perfect gig for her. While I know many fans were hoping Shonda Rhimes would create a vehicle for our girl, I’m looking elsewhere, specifically at Lee Daniels and his new Fox pilot about a girl group.
This Empire spin-off has named all its leads, which include Queen Latifah, Ryan Destiny, Jude Demorest and Brittany O’Grady. However, if you know TV like I know TV, then you know from looking at these chicks that this show lacks audience appeal right off the bat. There is no fire amongst this group of women and that is where Nicole Beharie comes in.
Nicole is an actress by trade, but as we’ve also seen, she’s an amazing singer and a kick-ass dancer. Nicole automatically brings an audience with her that the show will need in order to survive. It won’t last long if tries to live off of Empire’s hype, which has already faded to the tune of 4 million lost viewers this season alone. No, in order for this Lee Daniels spin-off to pop, it needs some Black Girl Magic.
I am never wrong. I told you Sleepy Hollow was a shit storm after I saw this season’s first episode and look where we are now. I also predicted Empire would falter in its quest to appeal to a non-black audience. Likewise, unless Lee Daniels’ new pilot adds someone who can bring in a targeted audience, this too will fail. Queen Latifah is old. Any audience she brings in will be old as well. And where as the other girls are young, I’m bored just looking at them.
This show needs some spice… some flava… it needs some Nicole Beharie.
