Whitney Houston to Star in Sparkle Remake

According to the Hollywood Reporter, comedian Mike Epps and singers Whitney Houston and American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, have signed on to star in the remake of the 1976 classic ‘Sparkle.’

As previously reported, Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, creators of ‘Girlfriends’ and ‘The Game,’ will be writing, directing and producing the movie themselves. Distribution will be through Sony Pictures, with production to start in the summer of 2012.

Editors Note: I checked out the Akil’s Facebook pages and no casting decisions are listed there. However, the Hollywood Reporter is a trade publication and thus, I doubt they would publish inaccurate information.

That said, I cannot understand in what capacity Whitney, who lost her voices ages ago, would fit into this film. What role could she possibly play? Sista? I think not.

The first half of the film totally hinges on that character, which I can no longer picture the once mighty Houston playing. I love her dearly, but her voice is gone and this movie is all about the voices.

I am just as disappointed in the decision to cast Jordin Sparks, who clearly would be playing the title role of Sparkle. Yes, Jordin has a voice- but she lacks any type of discernable charisma. I don’t see her being able to carry a film on her name or talents alone.

The decision to cast Mike Epps however is by far the biggest mistake of them all. Mike dumbs down every movie he is in. When I think of Epps, I think buffoon.

I really don’t mean to be a negative Nelly, but if you are going to remake a classic you should think long and hard about the names you bring in to take on such iconic roles. Whitney Houston, Jordin Sparks and Mike Epps have no place in a Sparkle remake unless they are playing supporting roles.

  1. I just read Whitney is suppose to play the role of Effie, the girls’ mother, Sparks will play Sparkle and Epps will play the role of Satin Struthers, gangster.’

I honestly just don’t know what to say.

  2. Whitney as the mother? Mike Epps as Satin the thug and Jordin Sparks as Sparkle? Are they kidding? I knew they would screw it up with the casting.

The Akils should have written a whole new script with new characters rather than screw up the memory of a classic.

  3. How about this… they DON’T remake the movie @ all. I am tired of Hollywood being too lazy to sit down & give us a ORIGINAL script. Instead they would rather plague us w/ reality shows & already made movies. We ALREADY know how “Sparkle” ends & if we forget we can EASILY tune into to TVONE( because it plays on there alot) or go to one these many rental places( Netflix, Redbox, &etc) & pick it up. Stop shortchanging the consuming public, if your getting paid thousands of dollars to write & be “creative” than get on your job & do that!

  4. I would rather it not be re-made but thus far the casting lacks appeal. If you are going to go with non singers Lisa Raye as sister. I thought Paula Pattan would be Sparkle. OH well,…

  5. Everyone is absolutley right. The casting is wrong on soooooooooooooooooooooooo many levels. They just couldn’t take their time and find the right people. They pretended to hold auditions for unknowns in the roles of sister and sparkle. It never happened. Your not being negative AT ALL. The movie will be terrible and bomb. Whitney never could act. I like Jordan, but no, She can’t act either. and Mike Epps as Satin Struthers? A role they turned into a comedian? Seriously? LMAO. Hollywood is such a joke now. None of these “actors” today will EVER get my hard earned dollars. I say NO WAY. Not Brad Pitt, Angelina, NO ONE. They all suck. No actors today have any depth or soul or charisma. That’s why EVERYTHING, every movie and tv show SUCKS. Bottom line.

  6. Truly disappointing. I have to admit, I was not thrilled when I heard that they would be remaking “Sparkle”, but at least I was optimistic. With this news, I’ve lost any interest I may have had. Surely, a better selection to represent this movie could have been made. *sigh*

  7. I agree with most all you said, SISTA, with the exception of Mike Epps. For me he was the one saving grace to “Something New”. I get that this is a different kind of role, but I think Epps has the chops to do whatever. He was up for Richard Pryor bio before one of the Wayans settled with it. Maybe it’s the fan in me, but Epps has yet to give what I feel he can give on camera. He was good as the Uncle in “Jumping the Broom” and in other features where he had minor parts. I have faith in him 🙂 But the rest of this is…whatever. I mean, Hollywood’s gone do what they gonna do. I came to that realization a long time ago. I refuse to protest too much about it. It wears on you. Drains ya. The only thing I will wave my rant-flag over is “NO REMAKES NO SEQUELS!” but Hollyweird ain’t hearing that either. Remakes and sequels/prequels, built-in audience features are where the money’s at.

And apparently musicals and music biopics. 😐

  8. if jamie fox can play Wanda and then play Ray Charles.

Mike Epps can do the same.

    Whitney __perfect choice__

    Jordin__strong voice__

i am gonna go see this movie,

  9. Jamie played Wanda then Ray Charles

Mike Epps can be great too.

    Whitney is a perfect choice
    Jordin has a strong voice

i would go see this movie i think its gonna be good.

  10. @ Blame It On The Rain….your thoughts are so very, very true. I would love to finally see an an orginal scripted movie for and about African American during the 2000’s. They are remaking everything. Reality TV and movie remakes are so, so tired. Where is the creativity.

  11. Yeah Paula Patton would have been a better choice to plau sparkle..Jordin Sparks …really???

  12. Yo, I’ve got the new script if you want it. Sister doesnt die. She goes to jail for killing Satin. Which is an accident. Satin’s character also isn’t dark. He’s a comedian. Politics won over creativity and they wrote it just for Mike Epps. It’s the same people who did JUMPING THE BROOM. Wasn’t he in the that? If you read it, it sounds really wack. If you ask me.

  13. I agree %1000 percent on this one.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. They are going to ruin it for those that may not have seen the original. Mike Epps? Ugh. Who is he going to play? The talent show host? That’s the only role I could think of for him. smh if this infact the cast.

  14. Do you all realize how young those ladies were in that movie. They were very young like teenager young. Paula Patton is too old to play any of the sisters. The beginning of the movie started off with them in high school.

Whitney Houston is a good actress and she can pull this role off. Such negative people on these blogs. What are you all doing with your life. What dreams are you all going after.

  15. Whata negative write up/ first the original movie was not that good. it was the music that saved it and sister’s part. lighting whack, bad lipping by the 3rd sister, just not well produced. irene cara, dwan smith and a few others were unknown actors

irene cara’s part in the movie was 16yrs old so how can paula patton play her. people being negative and probably never seen the movie.

whitney owned this manuscript years ago and now it’s been rewritten, she’s executive producing and playing effie the mom.

when i see you all putting up the financing to bring more black movies to the theatre then talk. this movie tanks, just will be even fewer black movies made.

i will support this and can’t wait to see who else is casted. Whitney’s always done a decent job with her movies and none have tanked. That’s a good standing to be on.

  16. Great news!!! I can’t wait to see it! Whitney is going to be amazing, nice to see her back! She’s a legend!!! Jordin Sparks is very pretty and has a great voice, she will do great! Don’t know much about Mike Epps! I hope Paula Patton gets the role of “Sister”. And I agree with those who say that the original Sparkle was NOT a great movie, it was average and saved by the music. They can easily surpass it with the remake!

  17. I used to think Mike Epps was just silly until I saw him in Talk to Me. It’s a small role (Dewey Hughes’ incarcerated brother) but he brings a lot of grace to it. I was surprised. He probably has a bit more range than we give him credit for.

  18. Can’t wait to see this movie. I loved the original and I can’t wait to see Ms. Houston back to doing movies. She’s one of the greats.

  19. Openmind….the original was not that good? seriously?? the lighting, really?? What year were you born? This movie was made in the 70’s…Everything about this movie is classic. No special effects, no computerized music…This is a old school classic movie at its best. In the same league as Cooley High..,,,If this movie can’t be remade right, it should not be done at all, period.
