Awkward Black Girl Writer Gets TV Gig

Issa Rae, the creative mind behind the popular web series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” will soon be making her way to network television.

According to online reports, Shondaland, the production company run by Grey’s Anatomy producer Shonda Rhimes, bought the rights to a script by Issa and then sold it to ABC who now plan to turn it into a half-hour comedy.

Issa will write and co-executive produce the show which is tentatively titled “I Hate LA Dudes.” The show will center on the life of an aspiring journalist who finds herself having to navigate a treacherous work environment and personal life.

According to Issa working with Shonda’s team has been a dream and she hopes to the show, which is still in the pre-production stage, will open the door for more eclectic roles for African Americans on network television.

Actress Gabrielle Union will take the stage as host of this year’s 10th Annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards. The 44-year old Being Mary Jane star, who accepted the Fierce and Fearless Award at 2013’s ceremony, will help usher in a new generation of Hollywood stars, including Aja Naomi King, Yara Shahidi, Issa Rae, and Janelle Monae, who will all be honored at this year’s gala.

Malinda Williams to Co-Host New Talk Show

Are you guys ready for another ‘The View’ style talk show? Well, Magic Johnson’s Aspire Network hopes you are and is ready to unveil ‘Exhale,’ a weekly chat fest starring actress Malinda Williams, former Essence editor Angele Burt-Murray, ‘Awkward Black Girl’ creator Issa Rae, stand-up comedienne Erin Jackson and journalist Rene Syler.

‘Exhale’ will have an eight episode run starting June 27th and will feature guests like A.J. Johnson, Lance Gross and Vanessa Bell Calloway.

Aspire is carried by Time Warner and Comcast, so if you have either of these cable providers, do support ‘Exhale.’
